They carry forests in their stomachs. 🌿
They move across borders that divide their habitat.
They’ve been keeping ecosystems connected for millions of years.
Baird’s Tapirs are more than a species—they’re a force for regeneration.
This World Tapir Day, we’re celebrating the work of @BairdsTapir, a powerful network of partners across Mesoamerica working together to protect tapirs and the forests they sustain.

Have you ever heard of a lemur census?

In the forests of Madagascar, counting lemurs is a vital tool to help protect Critically Endangered species. Findings from local Malagasy partner, Association des Guides Andasibe, have confirmed that habitat quality determines lemur population health.

In a study supported by @ageofunion and @rewild, Malagasy researchers counted lemurs in the Mahatsara Forest, where 13 different lemur species are found—including Indri, Diademed Sifaka, and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs. This intact ecosystem currently sustains larger lemur populations and is an example of successful community-led conservation.

Association des Guides Andasibe works to restore degraded habitats, monitor lemurs, and educate local communities on the importance of healthy ecosystems.

Together, all three organizations are dedicated to ensuring that all lemurs are accounted for and protected!

🌎 Remember the original Earth Day? The protest for our planet?! A demand for change, for a brighter future together.

That energy hasn’t disappeared. It lives in Indigenous Peoples and local communities who have safeguarded ecosystems for generations, and in conservationists who are doing the hard work day in and out to care for our planet.

🟢 @rewild supports Indigenous Peoples and local communities in protecting and restoring wild places, and helping recover threatened species across more than 565 MILLION acres worldwide. Because Earth needs more than attention. Our planet needs us to unite in action!

Today, on Earth Day of all days, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote to dismantle the Endangered Species Act, gambling away the future of life on Earth for short-term, selfish economic gain. President Nixon signed the ESA into law in 1973 with near-unanimous support across party lines. Fast forward to today, and it is the extractive industries that have spent decades funding misinformation campaigns since then that stand to benefit the most from the gutting of the ESA.

There is no ambiguity: this bill would devastate North America’s most vulnerable species, the ecosystems they hold together, and the stability and health of the planet itself.

As an environmental organization working globally to protect and restore the wild, we stand with frontline defenders, many of whom are risking everything to safeguard wildlife and wild places. They know what many of our lawmakers don’t seem to understand: that sacrificing the natural world for the short-term profit of a few exploitative industries is not progress, it is the undoing of it, and that safeguarding the wild is the only path to real, lasting prosperity.

We urge the House to reject this existential threat and choose a different course: protect biodiversity, stop extinction, and defend the living systems we all depend on.

🧊 Antarctica is changing FAST—and the wildlife that depends on it are running out of time.

The Emperor Penguin 🐧 and Antarctic Fur Seal 🦭 are now both Endangered, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species—a direct result of human-driven climate change.

The Emperor Penguin’s population could be cut in half within decades if sea ice continues to melt at this rate, driven by climate change. Changes in sea ice caused by climate change are the primary driver behind the decline of the Emperor Penguin, with projections that their population could be cut in half within decades. For Antarctic Fur Seals, warming oceans are pushing their main source of food, krill, deeper, out of reach. The result: fewer pups survive, and populations have already declined by more than 50% since 2000.

Protecting these species means addressing the root cause: climate change! The science is clear. The warnings are here. The window to act is now. 🙌 🌎

🐢 Species restoration takes time. But slow and steady can win the race against extinction.

Last year, conservationists released 42 Bolson Tortoises into the wild, slowly helping reclaim a landscape they haven’t shaped in generations. In the grasslands of New Mexico, each release is a step toward something larger: a future where this species is secure and once again engineering its ecosystem—digging burrows, cycling nutrients, and creating shelter for countless other species.

This progress is the result of 🥚 conservation breeding programs, which care for hatchlings until they are big enough to thrive in the wild. The Turner Endangered Species Fund is leading this work, in close collaboration with @usfws. Every phase of the conservation breeding program is designed to give the tortoises not just a chance to survive, but the opportunity to flourish.

🌎 The Bolson Tortoise is one of the first species supported by the Colossal Species Reintroduction Fund, a fund established by the Colossal Foundation, in partnership with Re:wild, to support critical reintroduction efforts through funding and organizational support.

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
