"'I believe that we must use cinema for its enormous power to alter perception and not soothe the rich,' she says. 'It’s not about delivering a message but rather about showing how an idea functions.'"

Thank you @carlosfilm and @latimes for this story on Lucrecia Martel and Our Land.

** STRAND RELEASING ACQUIRES BASEBALL DOCUMENTARY — DIAMOND DIPLOMACY by YURIKO GAMO ROMER — FOR NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTION!! **

We’re thrilled to finally share this exciting news with the world: after a 12-year journey, DIAMOND DIPLOMACY — directed by Yuriko Gamo Romer and produced by Yuriko, Marc Smolowitz, and Loi Ameera Almeron — has officially been acquired for North American distribution by the legendary independent distributor Strand Releasing!

As announced this week in Variety, Strand plans to release the film theatrically this fall, and we honestly could not imagine a better home for our movie. Strand has championed daring, global, independent cinema for decades, and we’re deeply honored to join their extraordinary family of films.

This moment belongs to an incredible team of collaborators, supporters, artists, historians, athletes, archivists, partners, and believers who helped carry this film across more than a decade of work. THANK YOU.

Special gratitude to our Executive Producers Glen S. Fukushima, Steven Okazaki, Jacqueline Glover, and Mari Nakachi for your faith, guidance, and support.

And to every donor, sponsor, partner organization, festival, and community member who helped us get here — this milestone belongs to you, too.

We can’t wait to share DIAMOND DIPLOMACY with audiences across North America this fall. ⚾️🇺🇸🇯🇵 To read the full announcement, see link in bio.

Wednesday! 🛥️ 👭

ATTENBERG
directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari
Greece, 2010, 97 min

+

CHEVALIER
directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari
Greece, Germany, 2015, 105 min

Join us on 5/6 as our Athina Rachel Tsangari retrospective moves to the Los Feliz 3 (@am_cinematheque) for an evening pairing of the Greek director's most beloved and influential features.

ATTENBERG - Q&A w/ Carson Lund (EEPHUS);
CHEVALIER - Q&A w/ Christopher Blauvelt (DP for THE MASTERMIND; MAY DECEMBER)

Bio link for tickets. 🎟️

About ATTENBERG:
In its irreverent use of (new) Nouvelle Vague, musical, melodrama, and nature documentary, ATTENBERG symbolically visualizes a change in generation and perspective as a father and daughter gently negotiate their individual rites of passage. The film follows a visionary architect who has come home to die in the vanishing industrial town that is his legacy to his daughter. Meanwhile, his daughter (played by Ariane Labed) is exploring the mysteries of kissing with her girlfriend, and the beyond with a visiting engineer. Tsangari’s film—with a soundtrack featuring Françoise Hardy and Suicide—is poised between sincerity and hilarity, tradition and experimentation.

About CHEVALIER:
Six men set out on the Aegean Sea aboard a yacht, and before long, male bonding and one-upmanship give way to a loosely defined yet hotly contested competition to determine which of them is “the best in general.” As the games and trials grow more elaborate and absurd—everything is up for judgment, from sleeping positions to cholesterol levels to furniture-assembly skills—insecurities emerge and power relations shift. As in her breakthrough ATTENBERG, Tsangari balances anthropological precision with a wry and wholly original sense of humor. Impeccably staged, crisply photographed, and buoyed by eclectic soundtrack choices (Petula Clark, Mark Lanegan), this maritime psychodrama becomes both funnier and richer in its implications as it progresses. What begins as a lampoon of bourgeois machismo and male anxiety develops into an incisive allegory for the state of contemporary Greece, and leaves a final impression as an empathetic, razor-sharp study of human nature itself.

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
