New installation: @thedarkroomsexhibition
DEVIATION by @studiosvensauer
The installation spreads out across the room as a carpet of glass fragments.
Woven from shards collected from all over the world.
In our society, broken glass symbolizes something ominous.
Broken windows precede earthquakes. Shards are broken during riots when anger thunders against shop windows. And there is glass that is deliberately broken to stop people. Shards of glass on the tops of walls. Sharp-edged borders.
If we look at our world today, there seem to be shards everywhere.
On closer inspection, we humans don’t usually come off well.
But are we really as dark as we perceive ourselves to be?
Studies and eyewitness accounts from recent decades paint a very different picture of humanity.
The installation is based on texts by historian @rutgerbregman .
The data shows that in times of great hopelessness, people always moved closer together. The willingness to help grew.
Since the negative is louder, this is often taken as a general truth. But in times of need, the exact opposite happens.
The installation addresses the misconception that people fall into barbarism in a state of emergency.
Sven Sauer works with the stories and data from the studies in his installation.
The shards are processed in such a way that from a certain angle, a light is created that is divided a hundredfold.

The installation stretches across the room like a carpet of glass fragments, woven from shards collected worldwide. Broken glass often feels ominous: shattered windows before earthquakes, shards from riots, or jagged borders meant to keep people out. Today, it can seem as though shards are everywhere, and humanity doesn’t always appear in the best light.
Based on texts by historian @RutgerBregman, DEVIATION reveals another truth: in times of crisis, people tend to move closer together, and acts of kindness grow. Negativity may be louder, but history shows cooperation prevails. From certain angles, the processed shards catch light and divide it a hundredfold, turning fragments of destruction into reflections of hope.

The German studio Studio Sven Sauer joined us over the last few days at the Colegiata del Palacio de Revillagigedo to show us all the nuances of hope through their installation Deviation.
Many of you came along during #LEVFestival to watch their train rattle its way through fragments of glass brought from all over the world. A spectacle of colours that made us reflect on the potential of coming together and working collectively.

There is another world behind the cinema halls. Cinema complexes have hidden dark transport passageways that connect the empty halls with one another. A labyrinth of back corridors, projection rooms and dark chambers.
The exhibition leads you through this tunnel system.
At the end there are 8 large old cinema halls, some completely gutted, some with a landscape of reclining cinema seats.
In this atmosphere, international light and sound artists build their installations...

Be sure to check it out. Highly recommended.
_______
Sven Sauer’s installations focus on a theme that increasingly challenges our times: hope—not as an idealized state, but as a real, verifiable trace.
Deviation spreads out across the room as a carpet of glass fragments, woven from shards collected from all over the world. In our society, broken glass symbolizes something ominous, and suggests that humanity does not always show itself in the best light: broken windows, sharp-edged borders, glass that is deliberately broken to stop people…
But are we really as dark as we perceive ourselves to be? Based on texts by historian Rutger Bergman, the installation reveals another truth: From certain angles, the processed shards catch light and divide it a hundredfold, turning fragments of destruction into reflections of hope.

2024 The Dark Rooms returned to a forgotten automobile factory of the 20th century.
This is a one-minute film about the exhibition that was only on view for a few days.
The abandoned factory was an unexpected place — silent columned halls, vast rusty steel tanks, and a tower once the tallest building in Germany, a monument of Berlin’s industrial past. Visitors ascended twelve stories above Berlin, encountering light and sound unfolding in every room.
Lightning became trees, forests burned with clarity, and cornfields emerged in the darkness of a hundred-year-old building. All works were new to Berlin, many premiered here, some created solely for this site. The exhibition existed only in this moment — and could not be repeated.
At the highest levels, small guided groups entered the tower’s most breathtaking spaces, while the remaining rooms were explored freely, alone with the dark.

This year, the festival starts earlier!
Starting tomorrow, you can visit the installation “Deviation” by German artist Sven Sauer at the The Radvila Palace Museum of Art of the LNMA.
@radvilurumai
@nacionalinisdailesmuziejus
“Deviation” resembles a carpet of glass shards, woven from fragments collected from around the world. Broken glass often feels ominous: windows shattered after earthquakes, shards left behind after riots, or jagged walls designed to restrict access to certain spaces. Today, it may seem that shards are everywhere, and humanity does not always show itself in the most favorable light.
However, “Deviation” also reveals another truth: in times of crisis, people tend to come closer together, and acts of kindness grow stronger.
The installation can be visited until January 23 during the museum’s opening hours, and from January 23–25 between 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.

At #MIRA2025, Sven Sauer transformed light into shifting sunset patterns, fading into darkness, an artificial sunset born from absence.
