Time is an incredible thing.
Past, present and future are not disconnected ideas. Like feedback in an audio circuit, each informs the other in dynamic ways.
MESS exists at that fulcrum. We house the stories of Australian electronic music innovation and experimentation — stories that explain, in part, the extraordinary richness of the form in this country today. We look back to enrich the present, so the future of creativity belongs to everyone.
On April Fools’ Day 2026, that feedback circuit turns ten.

Happy May the Fourth, friends! 💫 This Star Wars Day, @MESS_ltd co-founder Byron Scullin is here to show you around the ARP 2600 – the synthesiser that sound designer Ben Burtt used to create the voice of R2D2.
🌟 bonus fun fact, Ben Burtt also created the voice of Wall-E 🤖
If you’re interested in checking out more of MESS’s (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio) collection of rare and vintage electronic instruments, they run tours and workshops – and you can also join as a MESS member to have ongoing access to their amazing collection 🙌🏼

ROS BANDT: PROGRAMME NOTE | SONOROUS XIII
Ahead of Sonorous XIII tonight, learn from the internationally acclaimed sound artist pioneering new forms of sonic art, Ros Bandt (@rosbandt).
Tonight spans fifty years of practice, in which Ros explores the elasticity of time in her reconstruction of a patch she first developed for the VCS3 Putney in 1972, an indeterminate graphic score for flute and synthesizer drawn from the I Ching.
Outside of that, you can expect anything from a duet of sea urchins devouring kelp in Greece to Aeolian harps recorded in Moonbi, New South Wales.
"Consider your whole body as a haptic visceral listening chamber."
Read the full programme note at the link in bio.
SONOROUS XIII | 7pm, Thu 30 April [SOLD OUT]

The Roland Jupiter-6 has arrived. 🪐
Often overshadowed by its big brother, the JP-6 is a powerhouse in its own right: 12 analog oscillators, 6 voices, and that classic Roland warmth. It’s also a piece of history as one of the first synths used to demonstrate MIDIin 1983 — alongside the Sequential Circuits Prophet-600.
Now available to book and play.

Big thank you to everyone who joined us for a Studio Tour last month. 🎛️
A lot of ground was covered in half an hour. Synthesisers rescued from a skip bin outside a closing university music department. A composer who took over the Grainger Museum in the 1960s — because he wanted to share his instruments. The only working VCS1 in the world, which Nine Inch Nails' Alessandro Cortini once stumbled across here and ended up recording a track with.
None of it is behind glass. All of it is available to book and play. Thanks for coming and learning the rich histories behind these wonderful machines.
Next tour is coming up soon — spots go fast so join our mailing list to be the first to know.

Have you stopped to look at our front window yet? 🎛️
We've added QR codes to the display so you can go properly deep into the stories behind what you're seeing. And there's a lot to go deep into.
Seven shelves. Pioneering composer and educator Keith Humble's Synthi A and TKS sit above the legendary Fairlight CMI — probably this country's most profound contribution to music globally. A whole cabinet is dedicated to experimental composer Warren Burt. Also featured are the incredibly rare double DAISY system, and the Triadex Muse, built at MIT by an AI pioneer who was simultaneously teaching Stanley Kubrick about artificial intelligence on the set of 2001: A Space Odyssey. And more.
It's all there on the street, any time of day. Come past, have a look, and scan the codes.
