In a landslide of writhing textures and hypnotic rhythm, prolific techno explorer DOLTZ. Returns to Bitta for an expansive album that foregrounds his skill creating living, breathing soundscapes out of pure synthesis.

Since debuting in 2020, Shun Watanabe has issued a steady stream of LPs and EPs that quickly established him at the forefront of techno innovation in the Japanese scene. It was natural then for him to forge a connection with DJ Nobu's celebrated Bitta label via 2024 release Inception EP, a forthright club-focused statement to balance out his more experimental output on Muzan Editions and other labels. Elsewhere, Watanabe has also been developing a fruitful collaboration with German techno veteran Tobias Freund, resulting in two bold yet elegant albums on Dutch label Delsin.

On Final Trace, the DOLTZ. sound is steered with purpose towards tactile sonic terrain where microscopic detail rewards the patient listener. He explains a core inspiration for the album was Kobo Abe's avant-garde 1960s novel Woman In The Dunes, which drew on repetition and the quiet madness of an inescapable environment. That manifests as a forbidding demeanour that courses throughout Final Trace, detectable in every slithering trail of static interference and mind-warping tonal loop. It’s peak Saturday night. Lasers, smoke, hazy dreams and perfectly tuned Funktion-One’s. Even the trees are buzzing. The forest knows. Knows that a Japanese techno sensei is secretly entering Varden at 02:30 in the cover of darkness.

Doltz is a surprise, and not listed in the program. He comes in with an ambient, almost psychedelic sound. Then slowly layering of all the little sounds that circle around the main beat, letting tension build, balancing experimental and driving techno. There are no sudden drops, but periods of pulling back before reintroducing energy to the dance floor.

Doltz took us with him into what felt like a wormhole. The beat held us steady, but everything around it was spinning, stretching, and folding in on itself.

The reactions from the Monument family were as different as they were similar. Some were jumping, some were shaking, others were dancing pirouettes, moving slowly, or standing still. At times, it was like being inside a centrifuge or a washing machine. Not dizzy, but surrounded, as if the sound pressed against the body. His set was a physical experience: immersive, disorienting, yet weirdly grounding at the same time.

Friends, step into the rocket ship and journey through the wormhole once again. Let’s revisit Doltz at Varden together.

Operating at the intersection of hypnotic techno, ambient drift and experimental sound, DOLTZ constructs immersive live environments where rhythm dissolves into texture and reforms into motion. His work avoids fixed structures, unfolding instead as a fluid dialogue between control and spontaneity.

Inspired by electrical shimmer, landscapes, technology and visual art, he merges organic and synthetic elements into evolving soundscapes. Pulses and waveforms become expressive materials, shaped into atmospheric transmissions that blur the boundary between the physical and the abstract.

Since beginning his live activity in 2023, DOLTZ has steadily built a presence defined by depth and intensity. A 2024 EP on Bitta marked an early milestone, followed by tours across Europe and the United States alongside DJ Nobu. As part of the extreme noise live unit Omega Point ] with Nobu, he explores a more unrestrained approach, moving beyond the limits of techno and conventional dance music.

“Night Trip,” a party known for its unique presence primarily in Tokyo, will hold its debut event on Friday, May 8, at O-EAST 3F and Higashimaya. Joining first-time performers DOLTZ. and KABUTO is OCCA. Their first album Versus arrived on Delsin in early 2025 as a result of a chance meeting at Eden Festival the year before. The spark of inspiration led quickly to a complete and coherent first body of work, and the same can be said for its prompt, equally inspired follow-up. Dealing in the gentle hum of digitally sculpted ambience and needlepoint micro-pulses, Freund and Watanabe evoke the experimental spirit and mellow immersion of golden-era clicks n’ cuts techno. While that early 00s phenomenon sometimes cracked around the edges of its DSP limitations, here a rich and porous sound world blooms out from the crisply defined structure of each track. At times the palette opens up to more organic sound matter, and there is ample space for full-bodied synths to ratchet down the rhythm, but a strong digital core of granular processing and exacting sound design form the bedrock of the album’s subtle, sublime sound. Even though its calm demeanour radiates an instant charm, like all great electronica Frontiers Of Science is an album of hidden depths to be absorbed steadily over subsequent trips
