#GoodNewsOfTheWeek 🥳Wisconsin students defy ban to perform music honoring Marsha P. Johnson!

Students in Watertown, Wisconsin were set to play “A Mother of a Revolution!,” a lyric-free song by Omar Thomas honoring trans icon Marsha P. Johnson, at their spring concert until the school board banned the piece, citing "controversial issues.” Hundreds of students walked out in protest.Then Watertown’s Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church stepped up and offered to host a performance of the piece. Omar Thomas himself flew out to Wisconsin to conduct the school band!

This win has everything: students standing up to a close-minded school board, community leaders offering their support, and of course some beautiful music to underscore it all! We love to see faith leaders welcoming the LGBTQ+ community and honoring the brave Marsha P. Johnson. We hope the good folks of Watertown inspire more communities to resist censorship and celebrate trans history!

#GoodNewsOfTheWeek 🥳 Survivor advocates have achieved rape kit reform in all 50 states!

This week the Joyful Heart Foundation celebrated crossing the finish line of success for their #EndTheBacklog initiative, enacting rape kit reform in all 50 states, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. Maine just became the final state to require a statewide inventory and tracking system for rape kits as well as $267,000 in annual funding. We’re so incredibly grateful for the relentless advocacy of the many survivors and allies who worked together to make this win possible.

Mariska Hargitay, founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, said it best herself, "This did not happen overnight. It happened because survivors spoke their truth. It happened because advocates refused to let urgency become complacency… And it happened because our community insisted that every survivor deserves accountability, transparency and dignity in the handling of their kit."
