Former BBC New Generation Artist, baritone James Newby makes a welcome return to SongEasel with accompanist Malcolm Martineau for an imaginatively curated sea-themed programme from two star performers. The recital will feature anniversary composer Carl Loewe, who lived much of his life in the coastal city of Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland), alongside songs from Elgar’s Sea Pictures, and songs by Schubert, Duparc, Rachmaninov and Kurt Weill.

We are delighted to welcome baritone James Newby to our roster for general management! Newby will be represented by Senior Artist Manager Callan Coughlan-Davies.
Former BBC New Generation Artist, Rising Star for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, a Borletti Buitoni Trust Award Winner and a European Concert Hall Organisation Rising Star, Newby is praised for his, “wonderfully even baritone voice, velvet-smooth and secure throughout the range with an unshakable technique” (Opera Today).
Highlights of the 25-26 season include Count Almaviva Le Nozze di Figaro with the Orchestra of the 18th Century followed by a fully staged production for Opera North in Leeds. James makes his Grange Park Opera and role debut as Figaro Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Recent appearances include Mahler RückertLieder in 2023 with Mitsuko Uchida, Die schöne Müllerin with Simon Lepper and a mixed programme of Dowland, Schubert, Wolf and Liszt with Joseph Middleton.
Newby said, “I consider myself extremely lucky to have met Callan and to be moving into this next stage of my career with him at IMGA. It is a huge privilege to join this incredible roster of artists, and I’m already inspired by Callan’s drive and dedication, as well as his warmth and openness. I’m grateful to know I’ll be represented in the industry not only by a phenomenal agent and agency, but also by a brilliant human being.”
