Next up in our Festival Diaries series is "Clemente Park," a project that hits a home run straight to the heart. ⚾
Artist and ArtPhilly curatorial collaborator Raúl Romero (@rauoool) in collaboration with the Philadelphia Latino Arts and Film Festival (@plaff_filmfestival), celebrates America's favorite pastime, Puerto Rican culture and Roberto Clemente, the first Latino player to be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame, through a site-specific activation that serves as a connection point to the neighborhood and the greater city of Philadelphia.
"It's a new and additional way to think of how we respond to where we live and how we connect with each other, and taking all of these things into consideration as a turning point of: what now?"
We can't wait for you to enjoy "Clemente Park" this Spring!

Last days to see “Sound Check” at Studio 105, on view through August 31! The exhibition brings together a rotating set of Raúl Romero’s sound sculptures alongside a new series of sound pictures, made from colorized spectrograms that turn the sound of the Coquí frog into image.
Romero often begins with the form of an instrument, then rewires its function in unconventional ways. In “Sounding Brass”, for example, solenoids transform a set of cymbals into both mallets and speakers, playing to the beat of a playlist that draws from the diversity of Puerto Rican music and its diaspora.
Catch it before the installation wraps up later this week!

Last chance to see “Sound Check” by Philadelphia-based artist Raúl Romero!
Pictured here is “Sounding Brass”, a sculpture that takes the form of an instrument but is wired in a unique way. Romero uses solenoids (mechanisms that convert electrical energy into movement) to turn a series of cymbals into both mallets and speakers. The installation sends music through the solenoid, which then strikes the cymbals along to the beat. The playlist spans genres and time periods, but centers on the diversity of music from Puerto Rico and its diaspora.
On view until August 31st.

Last week at Studio 105, Philadelphia-based artist Raúl Romero led visitors through a second iteration of Conducting Connections: A Sound Activation, first hosted at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in 2023.
During the experiment, Romero sonified his sculpture “Sounding Brass” by translating the bio data of participants into a real-time soundscape. Visitors joined hands to create a human circuit, listening as the electrical energy flowing through them was transmitted into and out of the sculpture.

Now on view at Studio 105 at Ray Philly: “Con Semillas de aquí y allá” by Philadelphia-based artist Raúl Romero.
This immersive sound installation features Calabash gourds, grown and dried in Romero’s West Philly garden, reimagined as sculptural speakers. Traditionally used to make the Güiro, a Puerto Rican percussion instrument, the gourds now carry layered field recordings of Coquí frogs from Puerto Rico and Katydids from Pennsylvania.
Together, they create a soundscape that reflects on migration, memory, and the cultural connection between the island and the Northeastern U.S.

When you know the story behind the work, you might just see parts of yourself in it. Con Semillas de Aquí y Allá by Philadelphia-based sound artist Raúl Romero is a meditation on Puerto Rican migration to the Northeastern U.S. and the ways cultural identity endures across distance. Romero grew Calabash gourds in his West Philly garden, traditionally used to make the Puerto Rican Güiro, and transformed them into sculptural speakers that play layered sounds of the Puerto Rican Coquí frog and the Katydids of Pennsylvania.
The piece is part of Sound Check, a rotating exhibition of Romero’s sound sculptures and audio pictures, on view at Studio 105 at Ray Philly through August 22.

Last week to see A Vessel for Infrared Sound – Transmission from Arecibo by Raúl Romero at Studio 105 before it rotates out of Sound Check!
Inspired by a 2020 research trip to Puerto Rico, this sculpture references the Arecibo Observatory, once known as the “Big Ear” for its ability to send and receive radio signals from space. A copper dish resonates with infrasound: frequencies too low to hear, but visible through vibration. The material, often used in audio cables and recording gear, becomes both conduit and form.
Part of Sound Check, a rotating presentation of Romero’s sound sculptures exploring the sonic landscape of Puerto Rico and its diaspora, on view at Ray Philly through August 22.
