De ce qu’il nous reste is now on view as part of Parasit group show, in the former metal shelving of Jean Wauters in Brussels.

The collective installation will be open to the public 4 days, from April 30 to May 3, from 11am to 6pm.

“In a form of archaeology of the present, this work attends to the ruins of what is no longer valued, within a society shaped by the acceleration of fast consumption. Biological, manufactured, and industrial fragments are approached as vessels of memory, carrying invaluable traces of past lives.

Weaving operates as a connective structure, embedding these fragments within layered temporalities, from geological time to the rapid cycles of industrial production. These systems unfold as hybrid spaces, where energy circulates between organic remains and the residues of the modern world.

Presented as artifacts, the works draw on the display strategies of natural history museums, questioning hyperconsumption while revealing the quiet beauty of the everyday, the broken, and the discarded.

This first piece brings together fragments of broken glass sourced from the “Fornace” of Murano (glassblowing workshops in Venice), alongside shells and remnants of studio debris.

De ce qu’il nous reste, engages with past and present histories while projecting a future in which architectures of repair can be imagined. In these scenarios, fragility and rupture become active forces, fragments no longer exist as passive witnesses or ruins of a disappearing past, but instead connect to propose new modes of existence and coexistence.”

She explores the transformation of materials derived from reuse, bringing to light their memory, history, and poetic charge. Through braiding, twisting, and assembly techniques, she questions the boundaries between art and design, striving to create sculptural forms that are also functional.

The world of textiles and artisanal techniques plays a central role in her work, yet she intentionally distances herself from conventional tools, opting for a more experimental and bodily approach.

Her ecological and political commitment is inseparable from her practice. She refuses to produce new materials and instead prioritizes existing resources, collaborating with structures such as @souplotheque , textile industries, and urban construction sites to reclaim fibers, production surpluses, and materials considered waste. This choice goes beyond the aesthetic and becomes a reflection on overconsumption and the environmental impact of creation.

Her experience has led her to work with textile heritage museums, including le Musée de la Rubannerie in Comines, where she gained expertise in the operation of braiding machines. This experience now informs her project, which seeks to reintegrate ancient techniques into a contemporary and responsible approach.

Abel Jallais (born in 1992) is a French artist currently living and working in Brussels. He obtained his Master’s degree in Ceramics from La Cambre (BE) in 2018, after graduating from the Fine Arts School of Angers (FR) in 2015.

His practice navigates between formal research and a conceptual exploration of the utilitarian object, which he approaches as a fictional territory. This process creates a dialogue of ambiguity and misinterpretation between form and viewer.

Often conceived as futuristic archaeologies or hydraulic systems awaiting activation, the forms he creates maintain an aesthetic tension between industrial objects and archaic structures. The hand-crafted process, with its inherent imperfections, disrupts these standardized forms while intensifying the viewer’s desire to understand them.

By blurring the markers of an object’s original function, he opens it up to free interpretation, allowing for multiple readings. The quest for understanding then becomes a direct, almost primitive, interaction with the form—looking, circling, and intuitively grasping it.
