Long story incoming. About 2 years ago I felt like I’d hit a ceiling in my work, things were moving slowly and jobs were becoming repetitive. There was a spark gone that was there when I started my career. Then by chance I met @tomday on a job he was directing in Cleveland, we got chatting and a couple of months later he asked if I could come on to help edit one of his upcoming projects. From there we started an incredibly collaborative relationship spanning across multiple films and projects.
Fast forward to October last year, @tomday and @arthur_lok1 ask me if I wanted to come on board to edit a feature documentary about the Francis Ngannou and Tyson Fury superfight in Riyadh, a dream project for me.
The week that followed felt like we had all stepped into a Hollywood film, shooting and working alongside some icons of the Boxing and MMA world, people I’d watched my whole life.
Then came the fight, what had been touted and talked about as a mockery of the sport and a “gimmick” fight ended up being one of the toughest tests of Fury’s career. Francis Ngannou, the man nobody gave a chance to, took Fury to a the edge of a loss, writing yet another chapter in his unbelievable life story.
When we left Riyadh, I think we all knew we had something special on our hands.
After weeks of late night sessions in the editing suite, working through weekends, Whatsapping ideas back and forth, cutting and recutting scenes, and exporting countless “final” versions, we finished our film.
The Battle of the Baddest is out now on Netflix. What a ride.
