@tek_dec works at the vanguard of the new Naarm/Melbourne sound. Through meticulously detailed production, raucous DJing, and boundary-pushing live sets, LOIF dissolves genre boundaries to spawn a shapeshifting sonic organism that is entirely his own. LOIF’s productions arrive on a broad set of labels - including Animalia, Ute.Rec, Amniote Editions, INDEX Records, Pressure Dome - a reflection of the broad set of influences he draws from. His tracks strike a delicate balance between cold accents and warm basslines; humid atmospherics and slicing, sci-fi synthesis; introspection and propulsive momentum; and tones that reflect both the natural and the digital. It’s all threaded together with his incredible ear and technical skill for sound design, each aural element constantly undulating with fluid textural shifts. Organic motifs are bent through a prism and fractalized into new forms.

This place has certainly changed over the last hundred years. From Indigenous environmental harmony to colonial industry and extraction, and now some present-day blend of concrete expansion and inner-city life.

While the real heritage of this place might long have been built over and redeveloped since, time is still an interesting factor in most things. And as we’ve now settled into our cozy space in Woolloongabba, we’re grateful for what’s existed here before us, and now alongside us.

Today, the Clarence corner is a bit of a peak-hour traffic zone, with an abundance of Mater and QLD Children’s Hospital agendas, patients and staff moving around the area, accented with plenty o’ lanes and a bus terminal right near @nursestationcafe. Closer to us there’s a @pinotandpicassoau, ECKO Hand Therapy, @hatchmaternity and a film production company; @tlf_filmtv.

Across Stanley St we can wave at @canyoukeepasecret33, @brisbanebrewingco, @cestbonrestaurantandlebonbar, @clarence.restaurant and the @gabba_art gallery. A little stroll along Annerley Rd and we can find @deadpuppetsociety and the newly re-minted @princesstheatre, with inset barber and its lovable bar & cafe; @fablesbrisbane. Then there’s the Princess Plaza melting pot, where you’ve got the iconic Vietnamese/Chinese karaoke of Ben’s next to @freespacevr, Gabba Kebab, @boatea_dessert, and the sweetest service of the Bahnmi House.

We’re talking pub feeds, tattoos, rooftop drinks and shared amateur ballads, just blocks away from some of the biggest touring artists and performances, and all amongst a sea of sirens, social services and miscellaneous inner-city traffic by roads, bike lane and sidewalk.

refuge is a platform for some of the finest organisers, noise makers and selectors in the community, and takes place on the unceded sovereign lands of the Turbal & Yuggera peoples. they were the first storytellers, dancers & musicians here, and their rich and ongoing connection to these lands and waters are sacred. to honour them, we must mark new heights of radical care, collectivism and disruption.

as well, @bringaplate is back in the studio for their monthly guided boogie ~ inside also due to potential rain!! and no ramen night, instead bring a plate ticket holders can get discounts at the bar 👌

in the morning we start off with @meanjinartivists up in the loft with some art n craft, creating change thru art! this months focus is ‘soil punk and community gardens’

in the evening up in @seasonthreespace is some live indie rock with @doubledateband, @satinsoul.band, @ivory_.band, and @stillfullfromlunch

then kick ons in the basement for @refuge_meanjin with @george_fotinos, @sani_rising, and @fhuira. come and have a dance

sunday

the weekly sunday treats is on, with a special onigiri menu from chef @rinaline on sundays only during regular cafe hours

plus smell library is down in the basement for an exploratory fragrance session, come and go as you please!

we’ve also got @cicadainstinct in the studio for another chainmail making class ~ once again sold out for the third time!!

and catch @post.script.book.club in the living room bar side with the usual monthly book discussion, this months reading is ‘on the calculation of volume’ by solvej balle

His no-limits approach to selection and genre-hopping has earned him a place on some of the country’s most esteemed lineups, where he has sought to challenge expectations and sidestep current trends in favour of timeless sonic exploration. Forgotten House B-Sides, rolling Techno Tools and Deranged No Wave Curveballs all land in the mix with considered intent, resulting in an experience which is both unpredictable and enthralling.
