Had a blast remote operating our @freeflysystems MōVi Pro for DP @robby_sabi on several awesome grip rigs courtesy of @ragtag.grip including a Mitchell adapted ice skating speedrail dolly and an overhead cable cam pipe rig for the ‘NHL - Puck Rush’ for @nhl & @nexplayground.

Some of the edits go by quick so let me know if you want a better look at any of the rigs and we can try and hunt down some longer dailies and do some full length splitscreens! (Also shoutout to our @backpack_rig #StayPuffed kit for keeping us powered up without a battery swap)

To more evenly balance our gimbal, we use small screw-in weights that attach directly to the camera rig. These are essentially telescope counterweights, and they happen to share the same thread size as most camera plates. They’re especially useful when a build’s center of gravity falls in an awkward spot—most often to offset a heavy lens.

Modern camera bodies are so light that a fully loaded rig—with a heavy lens, lens motors, and a mattebox—can shift the center of gravity so far forward that the back of the camera ends up hitting the gimbal’s rear bar during balancing. On the flip side, with a very lightweight lens, the center of gravity can drift too far back. That pushes the rig so far forward on the rails that the dovetail plate has too little contact with the gimbal to stay secure.

While you could theoretically reposition the connecting plates to compensate, that’s often not practical—screw points may be in the way, or a fan exhaust might be blocked. By using counterweights to keep the center of gravity near the lens mount, we can fly heavier, more complex builds with much better stability.

12 years ago… we took a chance on a small drone company out of Washington State and threw $15k we didn’t have at pre-ordering the promise of a demo of a rollerskating camera operator holding onto a taxi cab window.

The @freeflysystems MōVi M10 (the 10 denoting it’s dubious 10lb advertised payload capacity) was the first time the video world reckoned with a handheld gimbal device that could maintain its horizon and remotely reposition its perspective while held by an operator (the tech had been originally pioneered as a way of stabilizing and operating the camera when mounted to a drone). Our little kit (including a @paralinx arrow+ transmitter/receiver, @smallhd DP4 and AC7 monitors, and @redrockmicro follow focus which are all discontinued at this point) was assembled from reading hundreds of pages of camera forums and discussing gear with everyone and anyone willing to listen.

It also marked a major career pivot for me personally, as I formally hung up my AD hat (something that I’ve been known to wax poetic about now and again while watching tensions rise and the schedule deteriorate) as I moved to camera department full time as a specialty operator and DP before snaking my way back into the director’s chair once again.

A huge shoutout to my forever remote/wheels operator @erin.trout for saving my ass time and time again and doing so in spite of client often trying to steal her monitor from her cart while she’s actively trying to operate off of it. The same goes to all the incredible DPs and ACs we’ve gotten the chance to work with over the last dozen laps around the sun, and hope to see you all on set again soon.
