I’ve been ruminating on this for a while; grappling with the fear of hosting something and worrying about whether people will come or not - you know how it goes.

However, all good pondering must come to an end and I’m excited to finally announce the first ever Free Practice: a new poetry night built around the power of the duet.

I can’t lie. I’m GASSED. And a little bit shook. It’s going to be beautiful. And I'm hosting it in Brixton, at my dear friend Jaz's incredible space @gohubstudio

Across 45 minutes, two poets share one stage, moving in and out of each other’s work; riffing, responding, colliding; letting their poems transform in real time.

Think back-to-back DJ set energy.
But with poems.
And breath.

After the performance, I’ll host a conversation with the two poets that will be followed by an audience Q+A. We’ll cover specific lines of poetry from the night as well as their wider artistic practices and the experience of performing in this way.

Free Practice is a space for overlap, deep listening, and spontaneous invention.

Earlier this year I wrote a sequence for Reference Point’s poetry pamphlet series. Playing with rap poetics, I chose the letter W, for ‘what else?’ a favourite adlib that had been bouncing around my head. The poems swirl in a cypher from the ground up, through bodies, into the ether.

In June we brought it to life with an evening of word-sound-resonance. Sat in a circle immersed in a @joekinwu's shifting soundscapes we spoke in poems. A breath between them. Mic passed across the diameter, measured in the time it took the last word to fall to the earth.

The dust has finally settled after @weoutherefest (read as: my brain cells have finally returned to the mix), and wow what a weekend !

We played one of my favourite sets ever to a smiling dancing crowd on the Friday as part of the@brainchildfest takeover of Lush Life, and it was honestly such a joy. We worked through some older tunes from 5/6 years back, inter-cut with tracks from my new album The Oasis, and it felt like a real coming together or years of work from all of us.

The biggest of shouts as always to @ma.moyo, @isobel_risk, @nattywhynot + @brother_portrait on 🎤 duties, to @mahonsounds for the magical 🎸 licks, and to @reu.saax for stepping into the gig 2 weeks out (!) and killing it on stage.
