Getting On The Same Page: On Refusals + Resistance

Artists, curators and cultural workers in Toronto are facing new realities where forms of institutional support and public funding are being systematically dismantled, while burnout and economic precarity have become normalized. This community discussion aims to build a shared understanding of this reality, working to combat delusions we may have about public institutions, funding in the arts and to share strategies for survival amidst these hard truths. Following "On Exiting", the first event in this series, this session asks participants to reflect critically on what to do if we decide to stay: What can we change about artist-run culture and what can we not? How do we face insupportable working conditions of censorship, austerity and refusal in arts institutions? How might community discussion help to reframe these experiences not as personal failures, but shared public insurmountable conditions under pandemic, late capitalism, genocide and climate catastrophe?

Participants are invited to share their experiences in the round, to share what we know must change and to continue to add to a growing timeline of (forced) exits in the Toronto arts world, started in Session #1 (On Exiting).

Access notes:
A live annotation/transcript of the discussion will also be provided, as well as food and refreshments. There will be a separate room available for anyone to have a quiet space for contemplation outside of the main discussion space. The gallery is wheelchair accessible with a ramp at the door and a barrier-free gender-neutral washroom. Microphones will be used for the discussion circle.

Over the past year, the TPW Fellows, an expanded fellowship, brought together an artist, curator, and writer to build connections and support new, experimental projects. Evolving from Gallery TPW’s Indigenous Curatorial Research Fellowship, the TPW Fellows program was designed to foster collaboration and cross-cultural community among artists, writers, and curators, creating space for caring critique beyond formal academic settings. 

We were pleased to welcome artist Jaiden George (Tofino/Vancouver), writer Nawang Tsomo Kinkar (Montreal/Toronto), and curator Safia Siad (Montreal/Calgary/Toronto) as members of the inaugural TPW Fellows cohort. Meeting monthly online, the group shared their practices, identifying areas of interest, curiosity, and experimentation. Through these conversations, a sense of trust and kinship developed, alongside opportunities for meaningful feedback and the exploration of connections across their work with the goal of creating insight for each participant's praxis.

Join us as we launch the TPW Fellows publication highlighting each cohort’s practice, along with an included conversation on citation, memory and family lineages.

We create floral arrangements, build community gardens, support mutual aid networks, and teach floristry to newcomers (in and out of classrooms) - all to embody generous and fruitful futures.

Landlines follows migrant truck drivers living in the Greater Toronto Area as they navigate the unjust realities of the trucking industry — wage theft, inadequate training and unsafe conditions, exploitative pay, grueling hours, and constant surveillance inside their trucks.

The film is followed by a Q&A with Miru Yogarajah, Jay Aramboo and the documentary participants.

This week, our community lost a deeply cherished artist, educator and friend.

With great love, we say farewell to Jessica Karuhanga — whose spirit, warmth, generosity and talent enriched Gallery TPW’s programming and operations over many years. She helped steward TPW by serving on our Board of Directors from 2017-2020.

Centring the body Jessica’s intimate and political work contributed to programs and exhibitions including Between grain, dune, salt and sky (2025), curated by Sarah Edo, and Visiting Hours (2019) by k.g. Guttman.

Her impact within the Toronto arts community was profound, recognized and appreciated by many.

We will deeply miss your presence and your light.

On Exiting
A Community Discussion about Withdrawals, Off-Ramps and Forced Departures

This roundtable discussion and community workshop is aimed at defining and disentangling different forms of exiting that we are witnessing taking place amongst artists, cultural workers and curators working in Toronto. These forms of leaving, refusal and forced departure are especially impacting those who are working from anti-racist, decolonial, queer, trans and feminist frameworks, and who speak out against the genocide of Palestinians by the Israeli state, who often pay the price for this work through acts of censorship and dismissal.

Members of collectives Aisle4 and Gendai will discuss the troubling rise in non-disclosure agreements in the cultural sector, and off-ramps out of arts institutions, respectively, followed by substantial time for community discussion. A key outcome for the event is the building of a timeline of events, physically on paper, of exits, withdrawals, and departures in the Toronto art world, and the collective organizing that has emerged in response to these troubling trends. Luis Jacob will act as a respondent, helping to summarize key themes and outcomes and direct us towards next steps.
