Everyday I’m asked for formula recommendations, and I’m often asked which formula is the BEST. But guess what? I LOVE THEM ALL!

I know, I know— but here’s the thing: there is so much to consider when choosing a formula for your baby, and there’s no single formula that meets everyone’s needs or desires. Aside from considering baby’s needs, parents should also consider:

➡️Cost - What is financially feasible for your family? What is covered under WIC benefits if you’re eligible to receive them? Are there savings to be had with shipping, a referral program, a points program?
➡️Availability - Do you want a formula that’s shipped right to your door? Want something you can pick up at any grocery store?
➡️Lifestyle preferences - Do you eat solely organic? Are you trying to reduce your carbon footprint? Are you vegetarian or vegan? Do you have ingredient restrictions based on religion that you need to honor?

The BEST formula is the formula that works BEST for YOU! Your baby will grow and thrive no matter what formula you choose.

It’s time for some 💦 WATER 💦 talk!

We get asked daily about what water parents should use to prepare powder formula.

The good news? You have options!

According to AAP guidance (reference is linked in my bio!), tap water may be used to prepare both powder and liquid concentrate formula so long as that water is safe for consumption. If you’re unsure, check with your local health department!

(Note that families who use well water may want to have their water independently tested to assess for mineral levels)

If you’re unsure about the safety of your tap water or would prefer to use bottled, that’s fine too! Distilled or purified bottled water is a great choice. I personally prefer the store-brand jugs at the grocery store which are cheapest— you don’t need specially-marketed “nursery water.”

No matter what water you choose, be aware of recommendations around boiling 🍵 Families with babies who were premature, are under 12 weeks, or who are immunocompromised should consider boiling water prior to mixing. AAP recommendation is to boil for 1 minute, let cool for 5 minutes, and then mix.

If you’re unsure what water to use or whether boiling water prior to preparing formula is necessary for your infant, please discuss with your pediatrician!

Have a road trip coming up? Here’s a tip for cleaning bottles on the go! 🍼💦

All you need is some dish soap (get travel size or put into a 3oz container or less!), a gallon-size ziplock and some paper towels.

I call this the shake-and-bake 🤣 and you can do this in any sink, even in public restrooms, or on a road trip if you have a thermos of warm water!

Rinse the parts, place in the gallon-size ziplock, add soap and warm water and SHAKE vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Then drain the bag, rinse with cold water to flush out the bubbles, and drain again.

Then EITHER lay out the pieces on the paper towel to air dry (if you have a hotel counter or an empty seat in your car!) or use the paper towel to dry each bottle part AND dry the bag before putting the parts back in. Keep the bag open to let any residual moisture escape!

Note: This method might not be appropriate if your baby is less than 2 months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system due to illness because the above hack it’s NOT a sterilization technique ‼️

🚨This is probably one of the most important safety rules when it comes to infant formula (behind washing your hands!!!)

🚫 Our counters and other kitchen surfaces can be full of germs and bacteria. If you place your scoop on a surface, you run the very real risk of introducing bacteria (such as cronobacter) to the powder formula.

✅ This is why it’s recommended to prepare formula with clean hands, and to always place your scoop back into the container when you’re not holding it.

PLEASE do NOT use products like this 🙅!
1. These containers haven’t been tested to be airtight or water-resistant specifically to hold formula
2. Scoop sizes are NOT the same brand to brand!! For example, Kendamil scoop is 4.3g, Bobbie scoop is 8.5g, Enfamil NeuroPro is 8.8g, etc. These differences matter! This product above has a 5g scoop which is too big for a 1:1 scoop and two small for a 2:1 scoop
3. Any time you’re transporting powder from one container to another, you’re creating risk for contamination

You should be using the container and scoop that comes from the manufacturer.
