Répétitions du Yamakasa Gion Matsuri de Fukuoka le 13 juillet avant la procession au petit matin du 15 juillet.
Ce festival, vieux de plus de 770 ans, est l’un des plus importants du Kyushu. Des équipes d’hommes portent des chars appelés kakiyamakasa, en courant dans les rues. Ils avancent au pas, dans une chorégraphie millimétrée, tout en criant « Oissa ! », un cri de rythme et d’encouragement, scandé à l’unisson.
Tout au long du parcours, les riverains jettent de l’eau sur les porteur.
C’est un geste à la fois pratique, pour les rafraîchir, et symbolique : l’eau purifie le corps et l’esprit, selon la tradition shinto. L’ambiance est déjà intense, bien avant le jour J.

Chaque été à Fukuoka a lieu le Hakata Gion Yamakasa, un festival vieux de plus de 770 ans.
Dans la première moitié de juillet, de grands chars décorés (kazariyamakasa) sont exposés dans les quartiers de la ville. Certains mesurent jusqu’à 13 mètres de haut !
Ils sont entièrement réalisés à la main et représentent des scènes issues de l’histoire, des batailles ou des légendes japonaises.
Mais le moment fort du festival, c’est le 15 juillet à l’aube.
Ce jour-là, d'autres chars, plus compacts (kakiyamakasa), sont portés à bout de bras à travers les rues par des équipes d'hommes en tenue traditionnelle.
Ils courent au pas, en criant « Oissa ! Oissa ! », dans une ambiance unique, entre ferveur populaire et performance physique
