Olive trees carry memory of land, of care, and of those who tend them across generations. Each bottle of olive oil holds the passing season within it. A trace of time, labour, and lineage.
This olive harvest season, Playte are reaching out to help build a one-of-a-kind, ‘limited edition’, community olive oil - to raise funding for farming resilience efforts in Palestine. We have booked a day on the olive processor with our new friends at @longroadolivecoop for the 25th May - now we just need the olives!
So, pool together some friends and join the harvest - we have an ambitious goal of getting 500+kg of olives total to @dukkana.hardingst on Sunday 24th May.
Recognising this post might not be algorithm-appropriate - please share it on your story and your mates so we can hit our target!
In preparation for harvest day on the Sunday 24th, we need help with the following:
1. more olive trees pinned! (If you are interested in mapping, let us know below or DM playte and we will send you the shared map link)
2. Harvest teams for the 24th (Sign up form in bio – please sign up ASAP if you’re interested so we can gauge numbers)
After processing and bottling, we will be hosting an event at Dukkana on the 7th June where you can buy the Olive Oil (further details TBC).
Little bit about why Preservation Pavilion...
A dill-lightful week 2/3 of programming starting tomorrow, be sure to come through

The food instalment by @_playte for The @akomankoso artist residency @casa_warrandyte 💫
A three course menu sprawled across a fire built by Playte themselves, functioning as both cooking vessel and sculptural centrepiece.
We shared Oysters with a fresh coriander sauce placed on a salty semicircle of fire brick. Kangaroo tail curry, Okra, yams, papadums and a leafy green salad. Finished with a keri dessert.
Everything cooked and shared with so much care, excitement and love.
An incredible addition to the retreat, and one of the highlights for sure.
🍽️ @_playte are a Naarm based gastro-architectural duo whose practice sits at the intersection of food, space and community. Their practice reimagines gastronomy as a way of gathering. Bringing people together through site specific dining experiences involving interesting and local ingredients, cultural connection and a whole lot more I am still yet to experience.
With an expansive body of work across galleries, farms and festivals. Niyanta and Wesley have plans take @_playte internationally once again this year.
It’s definitely a space to keep connected with, can’t wait to see what they do next 🥥

Week 2/3 at the Preservation Pavilion kicks off this Thursday with fermenting workshops, architectural preservation talk and much more! All is FREE to attend.
Hot Pickle, 12/03 - 6:00-7:30pm
@emily_simek & @roundabouthere invite you to consider our relationship to the bin. The salty guilt and ill-feeling we have around food waste. The sweet intervention we can make about it. Bring along some jars!
Culture 13/03 - 5:00-7pm
Join Maysie @mm_gardening and Patrick @farm.to.ferment for a hands-on exploration of how cultures are grown, shared, and carried through time. From the microbial cultures that transform food through fermentation, to the social and ancestral cultures that shape how we gather, learn, and nourish one another. This is a free event! Just BYO fruit / veg you’d like to ferment, and some jars.
Why we eat together 14/03 - 5:00-7:30pm
Soul foods - a food that you eat when you need to be nurtured. @safiya_alhassan & @yoklo.ono invite participants to share a meal with us, each person contributing their ‘soul food’ and the story that sits beside it. Alongside sampling these dishes and listening to their stories, we will each build a recipe book from our time spent together. RSVP required
Holding place 15/03 - 2pm
Holding place is a panel discussion exploring the relationship between architectural preservation, collective memory, and the spaces we inhabit moderated by @maniaisyellowgin in conversation with @simulaa_ @spoontzu Speechyley & Caroline Kyi. So how do we decide what is worth preserving? And what conceptual, cultural, and practical challenges emerge when attempting to protect the physical traces of the past in a constantly changing city?
Politics of Sambal 15/03 - 4:00-6:00pm
Sambal taste and draw workshop! Join @__besin & @arsisto exploring how to preserve cultural memory through a printed map of Indonesia’s diverse chillies and sambals, along with photographs of the dishes they bring to life accompanied by small tastings.
A LIVING ARCHIVE / MINCE ISSUE 02 ACTIVATING SOON
To kick off our next issue, we’re teaming up with @_playte for Preserve/Present – an immersive exploration of what defines Australian food past, present and future.
Through this free activation, participants are invited to help build a living archive by contributing objects, stories and memories tied to Australian food.
WE NEED YOU: find one item that represents Australian food – something from the past or something that represents it now.
Think paraphernalia from venues no longer standing, your VSCO pics of 2016 freak shakes, or early signs of what might come after the global matcha shortage. We’re exploring the passage of time through the Australian food landscape.
Digital items can be submitted via the link in our bio. Physical items can be brought to the pavilion at @balambalamplace between 9–22 March. Selected physical works will be time-capsuled as part of our Issue 02 project.
We’re also hosting a community roundtable tea and discussion on Saturday 21 March, where we’ll reflect on what’s been gathered and what it says about Australian food culture today. Insights from the conversation will help inform the next issue.
Save the date – more details to come.

Week 1 of Preservation Pavillion 2026 kicks off this Thursday at the Balam Balam site, welcoming an array of events and importantly - the return of sunshine! All workshops are FREE to attend!
Open Tab, 5/3 7pm:
The space opens with this premier workshop by @noreply_collective centred around the dining principle of sobremesa – the time spent conversing after a meal before the bill is requested. Participants are invited to explore this dining custom as a moment of documentation, cultural critique, and as a space of temporal design. Drop-in style, capacity 20+.
‘Drying Stuff, Stuffing Stuff’, 6/3 5-7pm & 8/3 12-3pm:
This will be a two-part workshop drawing from sun-drying preservation practices from @aditisingh_2k childhood in India. On Friday afternoon, participants are invited to come prepare chillies and lemon to dry on the roof of the pavilion on a ‘saree’ cloth, which will be further stuffed and jarred at midday on Sunday. Attendance to either or both sessions is welcomed. Capacity 15-20.
What grows between us, 7/3 12-3pm:
A cyanotype printing session from @_savagegardens_ using plant matter gathered from shared and informal garden spaces (community gardens, allotments, share houses, etc). The workshop will be exploring commons, stewardship, and what it means to preserve something shared. The prints can be taken home or added to the pavilion space, and participants are encouraged to bring along their own plant matter. All materials provided, Capacity 12-15.
Unconventional Still Life, 8/3 3-5pm:
A participatory still life painting workshop by @otilmn focusing on imperfect fruits and vegetables—produce rejected for their unusual shapes, sizes, or imperfections. This workshop will highlight the personalities of produce, and an imaginative approach to their consumption. All materials provided, open to all skill levels, capacity 15-20.

It’s ancestralllllll! Gays Who Garden part 2 !!!!
After playing with the chickens ( that was mostly me 🙈), we strode on over to one of my favourite spots in naarm @fenton.farmhouse The fabulous and talented Wes and Niyanta of @_playte showed us how to create magic with all the delicious produce we harvested from Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre!
Building BBQs and breaking bread baby, it was a glorious way to wrap up a day of getting our hands dirty and touching grass.
Takeaway? Get more queers in the garden and food tastes better when made with intention ❤️

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours.
