This week, the exhibition Temporary Presence opens in Rovaniemi!
The exhibition celebrates 30 years of the Visiting Artist Residency Programme by University of Lapland & Wihuri Foundation, and has been curated by Angela Rosenberg. She reviewed around 400 works by visual artists who have participated in the residency program over the years.
Very quickly, the central theme of the exhibition emerged: the tension between presence and absence, which is strongly expressed particularly in painting.
"Images show us more often something that is not with us at that very moment: an object of desire, a loved one, a beautiful place. And the paradox is that we experience the absence of the painted object through the presence of the painting", the curator says.
We spoke with Rosenberg about the curation process, the experience of working with an existing collection, and the significance of residencies in an increasingly digital world.

The exhibition “Temporary Presence“ celebrates the 30-years collaboration between Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation and the University of Lapland, as well as their joint artist residency program. The exhibition is drawn from the Wihuri Foundation Collection and is on display at the Rovaniemi Art Museum and Gallery Valo, Arktikum.
Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation supports Finnish contemporary art by annually expanding the Wihuri Foundation Collection at the Rovaniemi Art Museum. Over the years, the collection has grown into one of the most significant contemporary art collections in Finland, and various forms of collaboration have developed around it. One collaboration is the scholarship program organized by the University of Lapland and the Wihuri Foundation since 1995, which enables two visual artists working in Finland to spend a three-month working period in Rovaniemi each year.

This Coming Together is a spin-off from the Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts and Saastamoinen Foundation mentorship program from 2021–2023, a self-imposed exhibition reflecting the eight participant student's experiences of peer support. Like the ambiguous title, the exhibition offers versatile artistic entry points related to studying, working and being together within so-called art worlds and fields.
The Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts and Saastamoinen Foundation mentorship program establishes a peer support group to assist the participant students in their educational experience and prepare for practice post-art school. The program is part of the project International incubators in Fine Arts and the participant selection was conducted through a call for students at the Academy of Fine Arts. The program was run by curator Angela Rosenberg and artist Hans Rosenström, and the curator/university teacher Sakari Tervo was invited by the participant students to assist in the exhibition making.
