This year, we will engage with some of the most emerging questions, focusing on the relationship between the body and technology, where architecture here is no longer conceived as an independent infrastructure but as a medium entangled with bodily experience. We will explore how bodily experience is identified, translated and reorganised within a context where algorithms are deeply embedded in everyday life.

From the outset, The Sea Ranch operated as a coordinated design system in which masterplan, landscape, building and graphic identity were developed together. Barbara Stauffacher Solomon’s supergraphics were not decoration applied to completed spaces, but part of the same spatial language embedded within the architecture itself.

At the Moonraker Athletic Center, colour, geometry and scale transformed interior surfaces into instruments of orientation, movement and collective experience. The graphics intensified the spatial logic already present within the building while giving the interiors a distinct identity.

The programme studies The Sea Ranch not through isolated buildings, but through the coherence of a complete design position operating across landscape, architecture, graphics and collective space.

AAVS-KOREA: Encoded Heritage is partnering with Hongik University @hcau_official / @hongik_university this summer for a 12 day intensive research and and design programme that investigates experimental preservation within Korea’s rapidly transforming urban environments. Positioned between heritage discourse, digital practice, and urban theory, the programme critically examines how 20th-century architectural artifacts are continuously reinterpreted, neglected, or erased under conditions of redevelopment, densification, and socio-economic pressure.

Within the umbrella of the AA Visting School @aavisting_school, the course will be directed and taught by current AA Unit Masters, Sho Ito / @studio__ito & Jisoo Hwang / @jisoo_hwang_ who co-leads @aa_inter_17 together with Tae Hyuk Kim / @fakeprintshop who teaches at Hongik School of Architecture.

AAVS-KOREA: Encoded Heritage is supported by Cinnovate: Towards Future Circular Cities through Innovative Education and Entrepreneurship, a pan-European initiative funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology Higher Education Initiative, part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.

Excess & Experiments: Our Manifesto - part 2

We look to the margins: Self-builders and amateurs who follow their own rules of taste and construction are our teachers. We learn from the extravagant, the idiosyncratic, the feral, the totally untamed.

We let loose: We push designs too far. We reuse, recombine, experiment. We work with our hands and with machines, physically and digitally, and don’t treat those as opposites. We follow intuition, and refine it through iterations.

We learn from each other: We provoke, exchange and collaborate. We build at 1:1.

We celebrate each other’s work! Because excess and experiments is not just a methodology.

Spatialising the Rights of Nature

The workshop is developed in collaboration with IUAV University of Venice and TU Delft, fostering a shared platform for research, experimentation and cross-disciplinary exchanges.

For 2026, Terrain Lab continues its exploration of the Venice Lagoon – one of the world’s most fragile intertidal ecosystems that has been shaped by centuries of environmental transformation and human intervention.

In 2025, the Declaration of the Rights of the Venice Lagoon was drafted to demand the legal protection of the lagoon. As part of this workshop, the lagoon is understood not as a passive object or resource to be exploited, but as a living socioecological subject with rights. The workshop engages with the concept of the international Rights of Nature movement, to explore how ecological and legal frameworks can be spatialised, interpreted and developed through design.

The programme asks: how can rights be spatialised and translated into landscape practices, design tools, forms of representation and modes of ecological stewardship capable of strengthening environmental justice, public responsibility and the lagoon’s long-term well-being?

Excess & Experiments: A Manifesto

1. Excess

We believe in excess: Not as waste, but as resistance. As a celebration of the life people actually live, the way they actually build, the culture they actually inhabit in Mexico City, with a fearlessness in building that contemporary architecture has forgotten.

We are not afraid of ornament: We embrace texture, colour, and mixing them all up together. Ornament is not only decoration. It is identity and craft. It is a language that starts from our bodies and translates into the fabric of what we build.

The performance of a structure is not the whole of architecture and ornament can go further than just building physics, by carrying memories, desire, and belonging.

AA DLAB 2026: Robotic 3D Printing and Reusable Formwork Systems

​The Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture invites applications for AA DLAB 2026, an intensive research forum in London dedicated to the advancement of contemporary architectural practice through the lens of computational design and robotic fabrication.

​Reimagining Tooling: ​Traditional construction relies on sacrificial formwork and carbon-intensive binders, mortars and chemical adhesives that render material recovery nearly impossible. AA DLAB 2026 challenges this waste-heavy paradigm by investigating robotic 3D printing as a primary method for creating complex, reusable formwork systems.

​By utilizing robotic precision to print bespoke, modular molds, the programme explores a shift toward binderless construction. In this framework, 3D-printed mediators facilitate the assembly of dry-jointed, interlocking geometries that achieve structural stability through form and friction alone.

By replacing permanent bonding agents with roboticized, reusable tooling, we enable the pure recovery of materials at the end of a building's lifecycle. This approach leads to transformation of the built environment into a temporary reservoir of resources rather than a source of future waste.

Participants will explore how 3D-printed formwork can reconcile found or heterogeneous resources into coherent, reversible structures. ​Through the integration of algorithmic design and advanced fabrication, DLAB 2026 directly challenges conventional assumptions regarding permanence and the environmental cost of traditional material realization.
