music being one of my main way of expression, I recently took the opportunity of one of my gigs in Paris to use my music background to show my support to my Caribbean people — as well as all oppressed peoples.

I mixed in a track of traditional Caribbean music, gwo ka, with a mental techno track. the lyrics are in creole — our regional language — and sing the despair of Black People from our islands who despite the end of slavery in 1848 are still economically and systemically enslaved.

the French Overseas Territories are in crisis and suffer from what is left of the colonial oppression. going grocery shopping cost 4 to 5, sometimes 10 times more than on the main land!
now Mayotte is slowly dying with no help, no food, no water after the deadly ouragan.
and a conman has been chosen to be our Overseas Minister.
so most of us hurt because we feel like we are considered as less French therefore less important than the main land regions.

also, my origins being deeply rooted in slavery and oppression, I can only relate to all the oppressed places in the world: Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Congo, Sudan, Ukraine, Georgia. Kimbé red, pa moli ✊🏾

now let me just tell you the story of the intro track of the set. for this special occasion, I collaborated with a super talented artist who composed the intro track for me: @_____eva_____techno 🤍 you can partially hear it on slide 2. it uses extracts from the movie Sinners, a movie that deeply moved my soul as a black woman and as a black woman DJ. and when I saw that special scene, I knew I had to use it for my closing set intro. I wanted a very cinematic intro that would encapsulate the cultural bound between Black People’s History and Music, something beautifully solemn to start the journey, capture your ears and honor the black roots of blues & techno.Eva did a brilliant job at translating this into a track 🙏🏾
