Friends— we are excited to announce that the Common Practice newsletter will be launching this month.

This outreach will offer a wider look at basketball through the lens of contemporary art, and will feature meaningful stories, interviews with artists, curators, and industry professionals, and news and events within the global art x basketball community. For those pushing their practice and doing the good work, our hope is to not only be a resource, but to provide avenues of support in whatever ways possible.

To everyone who has followed along since the release of Common Practice: Basketball & Contemporary Art, along with subsequent publications, exhibitions, community projects, court renovations and public programs, we are deeply grateful.

We are looking forward to activating this new chapter, and have lots more to share.

Stay tuned for more soon, and thank you for your support 🖤

“Bobbito’s Book of B-Ball Bong Bong!: A Memoir of Sports, Style, and Soul” is a must have for the home library. We are proud to support the book release rollout with limited edition prints of the author’s 35mm photography, hand embellished by @koolboblove himself. ✨

Signed prints now available at commonpractice.online. Get yours today !

Proceeds from print sales directly support Brooklyn-based youth basketball non-profits including New Heights (@newheightsnyc), Chosen (chosen_nyc_bball), and Brevoort (@brevoortbasketballleague).

ABOUT
‘Bong Bong’ is an intimate view into Bobbito García’s life as a ballplayer, announcer, and performer. It doubles as a profound document for the unspoken folklore and history of the outdoor game, while speaking volumes to the roots of García’s favorite pastime―putting up jumpers and getting busy with the rock in his hands. In his words: “Basketball is a religion. The park is my church” .

Excited to support @kevin.couliau with the release of his 1st book - Blacktop Memento, fragments of erosion - available world wide via @asphaltchronicles and in the USA/Americas via @acommonpractice

Link in bio…

Friends & Fam',
I'm glad to announce the release of my 1st book — Blacktop Memento, fragments of erosion — a 160 pages artbook showcasing stills from my medium format archives, a series of 76 playground close-ups collected worldwide for more than a decade.
Introduced by masterful author @jessejohnwashington , Blacktop Memento traces an original cartography of asperities, wrinkles, and color spectra: memories sculpted by the encounters between man and matter.

Entirely printed and fashioned in French workshop @atelierbulk using traditional binding techniques, the book comes with an extra 44 pages booklet explaining the design & printing processes led by @richardbertetic & @lab.eillenoire .
Blacktop Memento is co-published by @asphaltchronicles & @acommonpractice in an edition of 1.000 and also comes with a limited-edition concrete sleeve (76 units) built from an ultra-resistant blend of concrete and fiberglass.

Follow the link in bio to grab a copy before it's too late !

If you are based in the USA/Americas, make sure to visit @acommonpractice for a faster delivery.

Shout out to everybody supporting my work since day one and extra mention on this project for @richardbertetic @cee_blaze @celine__lerebourg @mistermanage@studio_florent_larronde @thibaut360 @lab.eillenoire @project_backboard @madbasic

Looking back to when we worked with Project Backboard, Common Practice, and Artist Rights Society to transform the quilted work of artist Faith Ringgold, titled “Windows of the Wedding #1”, into a large scale basketball court mural in Harlem’s St. Nicholas Park.

In the 1970’s, Faith Ringgold’s practice expanded beyond traditional oil paintings to her first unstretched works bordered with pieced fabric, inspired by Tibetan thangka paintings, including the “Windows of the Wedding” series Ringgold made in collaboration with her mother Willi Posey. The 20 works in the “Windows of the Wedding” series represent the imaginary future weddings of Ringgold’s daughters. These works ultimately led to Ringgold’s first story quilts in the 1980s.

With generous support from @5starbasketball , we were able to bring these courts to life, and host a special day that included a youth training program led by @nodaysoffla + @teamhuncbasketball , and 3 v 3 tournament, co-hosted by NYC basketball league @mobadanga.

The Andy Warhol Camouflage court at Lower East Side Playground demanded further investigation and story. The essay, live now on Common Practice, connects Warhol to the neighborhood, to the history of camouflage, and explores the ways in which graffiti has become part of the fabric of the East Village. Revisiting some of our collaborative work with Cheyenne-Arapaho artist and advocate, Edgar Heap of Birds.

Along with Edgar Heap of Birds, Kindred Studio @k1ndredstudio + Project Backboard @project_backboard + Common Practice @acommonpractice partnered with @MoMAPS1 to refurbish and repaint the Murray Park basketball courts in Long Island City, Queens, NYC. With generous support from @5starbasketball, the day was met with a land acknowledgement presented by members of the Shinnecock Nation, along with a drum circle, dance performance, and open run on the basketball courts. Dominic Tiger-Cortes, founder of @hoopmedicine , led a youth basketball training program on court, while Tecumseh Caesar @nativetec offered a jewelry making workshop at PS1 for local kids and adults alike.

This permanent installation at Murray Park includes two works from Heap of Birds’ “Neuf” series painted directly on the surface of the basketball courts. In this work, the artist acknowledges the Cheyenne Nation explicitly and celebrates it by applying varying colors of paint to evoke the landscape, fish swimming, or bodies moving across the canvass from left to right. The 4 backboards in the park were temporarily wrapped in reflection of Heap of Birds’ signature “Native Hosts” sign series - an ongoing public project that uses signage to acknowledge Indigenous peoples as the original hosts of the land.

We are excited to release the first of our “1-on-1” Artist Dialogues series, featuring SHAN Wallace and Zalika Azim.

Interdisciplinary artist, archivist, and image-maker SHAN Wallace received the inaugural Common Practice Grant in 2023, and produced a large scale photo collage titled, “Dixwell Block Party” (slides 2-4) - an intimate portrayal of life in the Dixwell neighborhood (New Haven, Ct.), past and present. This work was shown in Common Practice: Public Access, a basketball-focused photo exhibition that took place in New Haven, at nonprofit arts organization, NXTHVN. Along with this work, SHAN also included “Hug The Block” (slides 5-8) , a series of images photographed in and around Baltimore, Wallace’s home city.

We were fortunate to connect SHAN with fellow artist and curator, Zalika Azim. Azim is a teacher, curator, and interdisciplinary artist who utilizes photography, experimental field work, sculpture, video and sound in her work. Azim spent time in Wallace’s studio, where the two discussed a range of topics from video, to photography, to the importance of what historic preservation means to the Black community. Click the link in our bio to subscribe + read the full Q and A 🖤

We extend our deepest thanks to SHAN and Zalika for their time and consideration. This conversation exemplifies the power of connectivity, and what bringing people together can do to foster meaningful dialogue, and strengthen bonds.

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
