What’s the name of a grilled corn seller in your country? 🌽

In Benin, this trade is mostly carried out by women and is deeply rooted in our street food culture. The women grill fresh corn over hot charcoal, after soaking it in salted water, until it becomes soft, smoky, and slightly crisp. It is often served with fresh coconut meat or coconut granules a simple but unforgettable delicacy.

Another popular variation is boiled corn, also enjoyed with coconut.

In Bénin culture, the grilled corn seller is called “Gbad3 F3no.”

* Gbad3 means corn
* F3no refers to the seller or the one by the fire

And the grilled corn itself is called “ Gbad3 Mimè” corn roasted over charcoal fire.

Food carries language, memory, tradition, and identity.
