Introducing Bruxa!

Bruxa is a collaboration between Make Noise and Alessandro Cortini. Inspired by Cortini’s music and sonic experimentations, Bruxa embodies the seen and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound. It is a new evolution of Tony and Alessandro’s original prototype circuits which eventually became the Strega’s Time/Filter Experiment. It is a multi-tap delay line with over a dozen unique feedback paths and multiple filters within those feedback paths aligned to allow for accumulation of noise, saturation and signal degradation.

While Strega is a complete synthesizer in a tabletop form factor, Bruxa is a Eurorack module designed to be used as one part of a Eurorack modular synthesizer. You will discover a number of differences in layout, signals, and sound. Living inside the Eurorack modular system, the Bruxa encourages you to patch your own sound and modulation sources, yielding results surprisingly distinct from Strega.

Another beautiful Fairlight CMI IIX project, this time for Alessandro Cortini:

The task was to repair his defective keyboard and four defective voice cards. Many keys on the keyboard were unresponsive, and the voice cards had various digital issues to resolve.

What's special about this keyboard is that it's not from a CMI IIX, but from the extremely rare Fairlight Lightwriter, a word processor that was never officially released.

Though the keyboard is compatible with the CMI IIX, it has a completely different architecture and uses different hall-switches. While the magnetic hall-sensors are generally contactless and wear-free, some sensors break after 40 years of operation and fail. Fortunately, we were able to source replacement switches from the USA, allowing me to successfully repair the keyboard for Alessandro.

I installed and repaired the voice cards in our test rack, then tuned them properly using one of Alessandro´s cards as a reference in terms of filter and loudness. 8 hour duration test and then back to the client.

🗓️ Extremo comes back for another edition on July 18th.

Following its first edition, as part of the Portuguese Capital of Culture 2025 program, Extremo returns to Falperra in 2026, living under the same format. The program runs from sunrise to sunset, blending soundscapes, performances, and installations with a series of concerts featuring exploratory and electronic music.

You can already check out the first names: Alessandro Cortini, Shane Parish, Calcutá, Joana de Sá, and Molero.

Extremo’s full program will also include a walk, installations, workshops, and other parallel activities. More to come soon.
