Legendary LA butoh dancers Oguri-san and Roxanne Steinberg (@lightningshadow_ x @dancingclay ) will be performing a special Butoh performance at Anzen Hardware ⛏️store (!) with Taiji Miyagawa on upright bass.

The evening will begin with homemade alcoholic +non-acloholic cocktails 🍸 by @j.sen___ , hand-selected sake 🍶brought from Japan by Koki, and homemade clam ramen 🍜 by the ramen legend Alex Kanegawa @seqarts after the intimate performance. Phewf!! 🥵💓

6PM meet at Azay for pre-drinks🍸
performance begins around 6:45 PM🎭
and food after next door at Azay 🍜until 9PM.

It’s limited seating and capacity both at Azay and Anzen, so please be sure to reserve your ticket in advance for the entire evening!! x

Last Sunday we served ocha (matcha) to eager guests waiting to taste the rich flavor of Koyamaen tea from Uji (outside of Kyoto), with a small sweet served first.

What a huge pleasure it was to get to revisit the French-Japanese spot @azay_littletokyo on my last swing through town + chat with co-owner @philip.hirose. He + his family + staff have made it the best place for Japanese breakfast + lunch + a true community hub, where mutual aid—whether it’s providing yakisoba + onigiri to firefighters on the front lines, pay-what-you-can fundraisers for wildfire relief, or being part of ICE rapid response efforts to provide support +aid for detainees—is part of the restaurant’s DNA.

Philip’s father Akira was the huge talent behind @maisonakira + his mom the force behind @anzen_hardware. And, it turns out @lagreengrounds co-founder Florence, Philip + I all share a love of horticulture + gardening! 🙏 P, for introducing us to the #takiiseed catalog, where you’ll find a gorgeous selection of seeds + kawaii vegetable names like the “snow muffin” cauliflower🤗.

In the early 1946 Tsutomu Maehara returned from being incarcerated during World War II at Tule Lake to open Anzen Hardware on First Street in Little Tokyo. The hardware store supplied many local SRO (single room occupancy) hotels with basic necessary items such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies, paints, etc. Seventy-five years later, Anzen continues to service Little Tokyo one block down from its original location.
