🚨 Big announcement – we are delighted to be relaunching the #HeritageRevivalFund in England today!
The Heritage Revival Fund has been made possible with funding from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (@dcmsgovuk) and Historic England (@historicengland), and forms part of the government’s wider £1.5 billion investment in arts and culture.
Through the Fund, we will provide grants to hundreds of communities across England, supporting them to take control of and find sustainable new uses for derelict or neglected historic buildings.
Focusing on town centres and areas of high deprivation, this funding will help transform these local heritage assets into vibrant new spaces - ranging from arts centres to cultural and community hubs and affordable housing.
The Heritage Revival Fund will particularly prioritise:
- Historic building projects that can help regenerate town centres and deliver clear economic and social impacts for communities.
- Historic buildings in deprived areas, including in the top 30% most deprived areas according to the Indices of Deprivation.
- Projects that will bring historic buildings into community ownership.
- Projects that aim to restore and re-use vacant or at-risk buildings.
The Fund is open to charities and social enterprises in England seeking to take ownership of and/or adapt historic buildings for community uses. A range of grants are now available to support projects from the earliest stages through to capital works.

‘We have been delighted with the support from the Architectural Heritage Fund and all our funders who enabled this project to turn an unused historic watermill into a vibrant community asset.’
Standing prominently at the northernmost tip of mainland Scotland, John O’Groats Mill (@john_o_groats_mill) is a historic watermill dating back to 1901.
Having ceased operation in 2001, it subsequently laid vacant for 20 years - it was clear that without a new use this iconic building, which is ‘very close to the hearts of [its] rural community’ would slowly deteriorate and be lost forever.
Now, thanks to a community-led solution developed by John O'Groats Mill Trust, the mill has been brought back to life as a brand new heritage visitor attraction and community venue.

‘…I’ve watched [Inverness Creative Academy] grow into a vibrant, thriving creative community. It’s not only a hub for tenants, but a welcoming space for art students, workshop participants, and the wider public, offering access to exhibitions and working studios alike.’ - @ian_whyte_art
When it opened in 1895, the former Inverness Royal Academy was the first purpose-built large secondary school in the Scottish Highlands.
Today, thanks to Wasps Studios (@waspsstudios), the Category B-listed former Inverness Royal Academy buildings have been beautifully restored, embarking on a new chapter as Inverness Creative Academy (@invernesscreativeacademy) - the Highlands’ first major creative hub.

🔎🏚 #HeritageDevelopmentTrusts Spotlight – North East Scotland Preservation Trust (@nespt_projects).
Established in 1985, NESPT works on bringing derelict, disused, and redundant buildings back to life in the Aberdeenshire area and beyond. It originally operated on a ‘revolving fund’ basis, with the proceeds generated by one project being used to form the working capital for the next. Nowadays, however, the Trust undertakes a wide variety of projects, owns a number of historic buildings, and provides project management and consultancy services to Aberdeenshire Council and community groups.
In 2020, NESPT was left 10 historic buildings in Portsoy and Whitehills on the north Aberdeenshire coast, along with a financial legacy, by the late Tom Burnett-Stuart. This generous gift has focused the Trust’s activities on the historic harbour town of Portsoy, where it now owns and manages the Portsoy Marble Shop and two holiday cottages.
With the help of the AHF’s Heritage Development Trusts (HDTs) programme - made possible by a strategic partnership with The National Lottery Heritage Fund (@heritagefunduk) - NESPT is working towards financial sustainability. Currently, the programme is supporting the preparation work to bring the Trust’s Portsoy Marble Creative Hub project to its development phase.
The Portsoy Marble Creative Hub project will bring back into use two semi-derelict Category A and B listed warehouse buildings at the 16th-century harbour into studios and workspaces for artists and craftspeople, building upon the creative legacy of the Portsoy marble and pottery industries.

It was great to attend the opening of Creative Dunblane (@creativedunblane) Community Co:working Hub and Digital Makerspace yesterday, where we were treated to a wonderful poetry reading by Jackie Kay, Scotland’s third National Poet, or Makar (2016-21).
We are pleased to have supported the project with a #HESsupported grant towards viability work.
Well done to everyone involved in making this former Burgh Chambers building come alive again. 🙌 🎉

‘The sensitively restored West Boathouse has brought back pride in a building that had become a bit of an embarrassment.’
Located on the banks of the River Clyde at Glasgow Green, the Category B-listed West Boathouse is considered to be one of the grandest buildings of its kind in Britain.
Despite remaining in active use by Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club and Clyde Amateur Rowing Club since its opening in 1905 and undergoing essential repairs and maintenance, by the late 2010s, the building faced significant structural problems.
In a bid to revitalise West Boathouse, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and the resident rowing clubs partnered on a project to repair and adapt the building for broader community uses.
Today, after undergoing sensitive restoration, it remains home to multiple rowing clubs while also now being a fully shared and accessible facility.
