🏛️✨ As we celebrate the successful completion of the restoration project at the Elyza Fraser Mausoleum, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Douglas Ledingham, modeller of old stones, for his incredible support throughout the project.
Douglas very generously gave his time, expertise and passion for heritage to create a series of detailed 3D models of Cluny Kirkyard and the Elyza Fraser Mausoleum, helping to preserve and showcase this remarkable historic site in a unique and engaging way.
Projects like this are only possible thanks to the knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication of people who care deeply about local heritage, and we are extremely grateful for Douglas’s contribution. 👏🪨📜

✨🏛️ Project Complete: Elyza Fraser Mausoleum 🏛️✨
A remarkable piece of Aberdeenshire’s heritage has been restored. The Elyza Fraser Mausoleum, a Category A listed building, has now been fully restored following a carefully managed conservation project completed in January 2026 🎉
📍 Nestled within Cluny Old Kirkyard, this historic burial chamber was designed by renowned Jacobite architect James Byers of the nearby Tonley Estate and is believed to be his only surviving building.
Since taking ownership in 2018, the North East Scotland Preservation Trust has worked to safeguard this unique structure 🏛️
Restoration began in autumn 2024 and has included:
🔨 Removal of cement pointing and careful repointing with traditional lime mortar
🚪 Repairs to timber doors
🛠️ Conservation of the ornate metal screen and dome oculus
🪨 Stabilisation and consolidation of internal memorial plaques
👷♂️ Hard hat tours, talks, traditional skills training and graveyard conservation courses
👏 This project is a true testament to the power of heritage conservation and community collaboration. A huge thank you to the Friends of Miss Elyza Fraser’s Mausoleum whose passion and support continue to drive the next chapter, with plans to open the building regularly to the public soon.
✨ Thanks also to all consultants, contractors, donors and funders for their support throughout the project.
Full details of the project can be found on our website, which includes impressive 3D scans undertaken by Douglas Ledingham.

Our Heritage Curator, Sarah Austen, continues working to sort, identify and catalogue the contents of the Marble Warehouse in Portsoy ahead of the Creative Hub project delivery phase.
The harbourside building became a storage facility for former owner Tom Burnett-Stuart’s vast collection of items, gathered over many years.
🪑 Sarah’s recent finds include three 1930s armchairs, full of character and still offering plenty of comfort, and a pair of Audi VW car seats from the 1980s, in excellent condition and still fully functional 🚗A 1950s kitchen cabinet stirred up lots of memories of days gone by, and Sarah luckily saved several glass floats which were stacked inside an old fertiliser bag.
The NESPT team is most grateful for support from Portsoy Men's Shed who assisted with moving and cleaning old cinema chairs, and also to Portsoy Fire Service crew, who lent a hand to move 2 sideboards, a twin tub, 2 cookers, a freezer, washing machine and sofa down two flights of tricky stairs - just as if they were carrying no more than a bag of shopping back from the Coop! 🛍️
It has been a rewarding process so far, with each day revealing something a little different.
As we continue to uncover more of ‘Tom’s Treasures’, the intrigue from the NESPT team and the local community continues to grow!
Follow @portsoymarble to find out what we discover next!
Thanks to @archhfund for supporting the Heritage Curator's role and the project works.

✨ Introducing Sarah Austen, our Heritage Curator ✨
Sarah joined the NESPT team in January as Heritage Curator. Her role is to empty the Marble Warehouse in Portsoy, ready for renovation as part of the next phase of the NESPT Portsoy Harbour project.
🏺 This means carefully examining, cataloguing, sorting and moving every item stored in the three-story warehouse.
🗯️ Here’s how Sarah is finding the role so far…
“Since being handed the keys to the Portsoy Marble Warehouse in January, I’ve had the incredible task of exploring the collection of Tom Burnett-Stuart, stored within its historic gently crumbling walls.
I’m sorry I didn’t know Tom, but I feel as if I am meeting him now in the stories people are kindly sharing with me about his adventures, business and personality, and there is a vivid sense of him emerging through the objects I am exploring.
So far, the objects tell a story of industry, including Brian Shand’s Portsoy Pottery, Tom’s marbling, the shop and holiday cottages, whether it’s a lovingly preserved 1970s electric cooker or a wooden crate embellished with stamps from all over the world, hinting at the treasures to be found within the Portsoy Marble shop.
Tom’s passion for local heritage and skills is also evident through kit preserved from the fishing industry, tools from agriculture and crafts, textiles and architectural salvage.
Right now I’m still up to my overall straps in removing bags of stour, rubble, wooden planks and toilet cisterns, with help from a cheery colleague and the Portsoy Men’s Shed, but soon my focus will be on cataloguing historic items.
Then I can’t wait to share finds with the people of Portsoy and surrounding area, and discover if local memories can help piece together the stories of the objects.
I am thrilled that I can apply my own local heritage interests to such a fascinating project, which is intrinsically woven into the history of Portsoy.”
🤩 We look forward to learning more about the objects Sarah is discovering during her work, as well as hearing from the local community on their memories of Tom and his treasure trove of items.

✨ Funding success for key heritage project in Portsoy ✨
🏘️We are excited to announce our ambitious plans to transform historic buildings at the Old Harbour in Portsoy are on course for success thanks to National Lottery funding announced today.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has announced its support for The Marbles, Portsoy awarding a development grant of £361,400 to progress plans to create a new creative hub in the former warehouse. 💡
The investment in Portsoy’s historic harbour buildings, including the former marble warehouse, will support plans to put the buildings right at the heart of cultural life in the community 🩶
The Marbles Warehouse in Portsoy is part of a significant complex of eighteenth-century harbour buildings related to the historic trade in local marble, grain and fishing. Now owned by the North East Scotland Preservation Trust (NESPT) which, with the Heritage Fund’s support, aims to develop it as a sustainable creative hub for local artists 🎨⚒️
NESPT Chairman, Marcus Humphrey, said: “We are indebted to the late Tom Burnett-Stuart for the six historic buildings at the Old Harbour in Portsoy that he left us in his will. Our intention is to bring the unused buildings back into productive use to ensure their conservation for future generations.
“Our priority is to redevelop the category A listed Marble Warehouse, which dates from 1765 and was designed by John Adam, into phase 1 of the Marbles Creative Hub. The Heritage Fund has supported most of our projects over the years and we are delighted that they are again supporting us with this one.”
💷 Since it was launched 30 years ago the Heritage Fund has invested an incredible £62 million in heritage projects across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

✨ Team time well spent ✨
The NESPT staff team enjoyed a well-deserved late Christmas lunch today at the @theknoweshotel in Macduff 🍽️ 🎉
(We missed the team members who were unable to make it! 🥲)
It was the perfect chance to step away from the day-to-day, get together, and socialise. With busy schedules and varying work patterns, it was great to catch up properly 💫
Thank you to the Knowes Hotel & Restaurant for the warm welcome, excellent food, and relaxed atmosphere 🍽️ 🍨

Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
