What does burnout mean? What does burnout mean in the urban Indian context? Are Indians lazy workers? Does India need to import China’s deadly 996 work policy to become ‘developed’, when even China has banned it?We worked on this documentary for CNA Insight looking for answers.
People are scared to talk about mental health in India. And, that fear is compounded when one has to speak up about corporate culture. Unionisation is demonised so workers have no way out. Industry leaders harp on about hard work and success; individual success that will lead to the growth of the nation.
But, what is the cost of development? Is it depression, anxiety, stroke? Or is it devastating pain that parents feel because their child was lost to corporate greed? Is it breaking down at work, getting arrested for wanting work-life balance, rising unemployment and gruelling work hours for app-based gif workers, or is it the empty swing that once was someone’s favourite spot in their garden?

Ghorer taan...
In no particular order:
Cobweb in the well that has dried up
Red Earth under my feet in the uthun
Boudir labour of love: lebu
An old, old tree
Apparently birds sit in the trees, eat the fruit and then drop them on the ground and fight with my brother when he tells them not to litter
I will be 40 this year
Why did I take this photo?
I used to be fascinated with the well. I used to drop spoons in it and then the spoons would be retrieved when the well used to be cleaned. I don't know if all the spoons made it out.
Julie doll. I braided her hair. I took two hairclips that belonged to my niece @oindi_26 and did Julie doll's hair. Boudi had gifted me Julie doll. When I asked her for Julie doll this time, she promptly fetched it from the almarih.
Bapi aar ma.

Work series: Part 1
This documentary was special and difficult to make. It shed light on how human trafficking continues to be an everyday reality for thousands of Nepalese citizens and how a porous border with India only fuels the billion-dollar criminal trade.
We met survivors, talked to people who are fighting against it, and spoke with brave journalists covering the issue. The documentary was an in-depth analysis that looked at how migration, climate change and disasters add to this tragedy.
This was also the era of VICE India doing absolutely golden work.

Bapi. Whenever Bapi would call, I would answer the call and say, “Hain, Bapi!” Friends at college knew this and would scream “HAIN BAPI” whenever he would call. He used to call me at least 7 times every day. If he would miss even one call, I would tell him that he didn’t love me enough. I was, and am #papakipari
1st photo: We had fought but the passport sized photo had to be taken for official banking purposes.
2nd photo: Bapi’s office picnic. @rehmansaba you see, I have inherited the darbaan pose, hehe!
The rest of the slides are trains. I love trains because Bapi told me stories about trains. I love trains because the last time I saw him alive was when he boarded a train from New Delhi in 2007.
This song because Rabbi wrote it for his father.
It has been 19 years. I cope by telling myself that it has been 19 years since his death. Here’s to the #deaddadsclub

Part deux of our CNA shoot took us to parched Sangrur district, Punjab, where we met farmers who lost their families to cancer (Sangrur is part of the “cancer belt”), and tread through the poison red water (courtesy a powerful chemical plant company whose owners have now fled to Canada) that feeds the paddy fields. Occasionally, we spotted strange objects on rooftops: a bird, an aero plane, a football - all indicating that these households have successfully shipped off their loved ones overseas to build a better life. Punjab was tasked to be India’s granary via Green Revolution, which has now trapped its farming communities in a cycle of MSP-dependency, debt at a time of climate change, and a shrinking groundwater supply. Sangrur is predicted to run out of ground water in the next one decade or so. Our piece, which looks into the politics of shared water resources (like Indus Water Treaty), questions internal mismanagement of water. Link in bio!

Some outtakes from our shoot in Arunachal Pradesh for CNA’s documentary titled ‘India, Water and Conflict’, starting with a beautiful song on river by the Adi ladies, the stunning landscape nourished by Ane Siang, the meetings Adi people have on the dam surveys and some protest shots, ending with a photo of our crew with the fiesty Adi women. International and National newsrooms need to work with Arunachali journalists more often to do justice to stories from here. Our work with Upper Siang News’ editor in chief @shaanjijong was a critical collaboration in the documentary. Link in bio!

My last professional assignment of the year was spent basking in the generous warmth of an indigenous community, the incredible flavors of their food and produce that grow right next to a sacred river, and the joyful moments that @arpitade and I shared while chasing stories of truth, struggle and belonging. Seen here with rainbows, delectable meals and matching pajamas. No spoilers here for the story, which will come out this month.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
