Hello! I wanted to say hi and put a face to this project. My name is Virginia Broersma and I am an artist based in Long Beach / Los Angeles. I started this project with Attorney Susan Schwartz and now work with multiple legal advisors along with lots of artists. We all want to make the art world a more professional space and to protect artists’ rights. The Artist’s Contract provides free, artist-centric contract templates as well as resources about options that a lot of artists don’t know about, like resale royalties.

Some exciting things in our future are the launch of the STUDIO LOAN project which is in partnership with @contemporaryartleague, and our FARE Consignment Agreement. This agreement is taking a bit longer because we’ve been having lots of convos with artists and learning about the variables that they may need to consider when working with a gallery - some of these things aren’t commonly offered to artists and so we’re figuring it out how to add them to this contract.

The Artist’s Contract website is a hub for free Legal Contracts for visual artists. It is part of a larger movement to establish better professional practices within the art world.Things like Resale Royalties for visual artists can only be enforced by a contract in the US, since we have no legislation providing for them (unlike 60+ countries around the world) yet more artists want this economic benefit.

We wanted to make contracts free and accessible to use for those that want need them. We’ve also answered a lot of questions and provided resources on our website. We’re currently working on a Consignment Agreement for a gallery. This covers many things and can alert artists to their options when working with a gallery. Questions like: Who pays for shipping? How often will my work be shown? Can the gallery discount my work without asking me first?

Are you an artist? Join us and Now Be Here on May 31, 2026, when Now Be Here marks its 10-year anniversary with a new community photo and full day of artist-centered programming titled Now Let’s Talk, Los Angeles.

The day will begin with a community photo of women and non-binary artists. (9 - 11 am)

Artists and arts workers of all gender expressions are invited to attend the Now Let’s Talk, Los Angeles programming, including Panel Discussions and Community Conversations. (11 am - 3 pm)

Now Let’s Talk, Los Angeles is presented by a coalition of 50+ regional arts organizations, and made possible through generous donations by Artlogic, ArtConverge, East West Bank, and Claremont Graduate University Art Department, with thanks to Fulcrum Arts.
