Oxygenation series - this is what I imagine respiratory distress to look like in the lungs a trauma I witnessed only too often as my daughter fought to breathe and eat. The Listener invites us to imagine non-human deliberation, shifting attention from documentation to reflection, from evidence to imagination.

The recording starts with the flight call of a single Oyster Catcher flyover at Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve, then merges with the sounds at RSPB Snettisham as high tide approaches. Thousands of Oyster Catchers lift off from the mudflats and fly to the lagoon beyond the shingle beach. It’s very noisy!

Botanical Printing
Animism and slow making as an act of resistance.
It has an unpredictability; an anxiety through uncertainty and change.
Using organic botanicals the process infuses patterns and pigments from plant materials with natural dyeing techniques based on traditional methods used for centuries.
The plant type, leaf age, and mordanting procedures (optional) all determine the patterns and hues obtained, building relationships to connect with my environment, learning with and from it.
Experimenting and exploring, I’m working in harmony with the seasons using materials I’ve grown.
A process with renewable and sustainable materials.
It results in each work being absolutely unique and irreproducible.

Willow prep for a current collaboration project…
Soaking and mellowing
After taking the willow out of the water, I’ll wrap it in a damp sheet or for 24-48 hours. This allows the moisture to spread evenly through the rod, reducing cracking.
There are many variables to take into consideration when working with willow; the weather, water temperature, the length of time the willow has been stored - all require care, observation of environment and a relationship with the material.
