Mothers Day is a tough one for me. I lost my grandmother at 15 and it truly felt like I had lost my mother. Except no one else saw it that way so my grief felt lonely and unexamined. I was falling apart and no one seemed to care.
As I prepare our 9th issue of Womanly on grief, I reflect on my own this Mother’s Day. Before boarding school, my grandmother raised me and my sister, rocked us to sleep, picked out our clothes the night before school, took us to school in the bitter cold, made sure we had lunch, etc. This was the love. The actions of care and tenderness that she knew we needed. What we missed from our parents in physical presence and emotional affection, she tried her best to give us through actions of care. She didn’t always have much to give but she gave everything she could. And
that has stayed with me.
I reflect on her love and it keeps my heart soft. Especially when I’m so angry. I reflect on how her love probably saved my life.
After she passed, the grief overwhelmed me in a way that I don’t know if I could even understand at the time. At 15, I fell into a deep depression that changed the course of my life. The grief I experienced set the tone for my mental health for years to come. Managing grief and deeply painful feelings of loss alone as a child was extremely difficult and in order to move forward, I had to build a lot of mental and spiritual fortitude. This has made me the strong person I am today.
The way we perceive motherhood, this label, is different for me. I’m grieving a mother’s love in my grandmother. Everyday, I see her love in myself, in my actual mother, and I see it in my sister and how she mother’s.
And I’m eternally grateful. If you’re grieving today, I see you.
