i moved out of my college apartment about two weeks ago and was reminded of this little zine i made for a workshop class when digging through my archive.

our assignment was to reproduce a zine in our own way. i had stumbled upon “Home is where our things are” by designer @v.ctorguan when shopping around at Printed Matter. i was really captivated by the cover which made me initially pick it up, but i really resonated when flipping through the pages. i made this at a time in my life where i didn’t really know what “home” meant to me anymore. i had just packed up and moved out of my childhood home a few months prior after my mom passed away, and as an avid collector like her, all i really felt like i had left for me were my “things”. i had spent so much time in my room and when i felt so lost i saw myself in my possessions. a reflection of my identity.

it’s one of those things that’s really not that deep but it is. i’m glad i can immortalize my time in that room and my collection at the time through this zine. i will miss it very dearly.

this year has been a crazy one!!! but i had to post one more time before it was over because this year i fulfilled a dream of mine. 

i can vividly remember being at the rite aid checkout with my mom, begging her to get me the “Born This Way” CD by Lady Gaga. this was my first ever CD. i was so captivated by the cover art, the beautiful booklet inside with iconic photography by nick knight, it’s simple but abrasive design. eventually i would become obsessed with pop music and the visual worlds around them. i’ve always been a collector, and my album collection is one of many, but it’s always been a dream of mine to one day be able to add something that i’ve worked on. that’s why when asked if i wanted to work on this project, i was beyond ecstatic. I can’t say thank you enough to both xiao and lesley for your mentorship and kindness throughout the process. i am so incredibly grateful. after many hours and different iterations, being able to hold it in my hands is the best feeling in the world. this project helped me gain back some confidence i had lost and reminded me that this is what i really love to do. 

i feel SO honored to have been a part of this project and to have the chance to help tell cacien’s story. reading the lyrics i was so touched by her writing, songs i felt like i needed to hear. if you’re reading this, i hope you give it a chance as well! (her voice is so beautiful!!!)
