When she first starred in the play ‘Prima Facie’, #JodieComer was 29 and had never done theatre before: “I was very anxious, very aware that people were thinking, ‘Is she going to be able to do this?’” Four years later, there is no question of her ability to master the material, but she has changed in other ways too. “I have more confidence, I know myself more,” she says. “I feel that when you’re playing a character with certain attributes, you are forced to touch upon, discover and illuminate those parts of yourself. They might be parts you’ve neglected, or that don’t feel very present in your day-to-day. That assuredness and confidence that Tess has – I found it easier to connect with those attributes.”

Whether she’s turning heads in Hollywood blockbusters or captivating audiences on stage, @jodiemcomer has the Midas touch, portraying complex characters with uncommon emotional depth. Filming for this series had started before she died following a fall at home in October 2025. “Jilly had had a lovely summer party in her garden that we all went to again – the best champagne, the best desserts: a true Cotswolds experience… I can’t believe she’s gone,” #NafessaWilliams says. “It was so beautiful to witness someone in their eighties making their dreams come true. Not only did she get a show, she got a fucking second season! It reminds you to never stop dreaming. You have to give it to her – Jilly really lived her life.”

“Cameron’s a funny fish – she’s vulnerable, but also the strongest woman in the world, and I can’t quite ever predict what she’s going to do next,” #NafessaWilliams says of her #Rivals character, Cameron Cook. “She doesn’t know where her life stands. Her whole existence has been shaped by Tony – and now, he wants revenge.” The actress has relished the character development. “I found peeling off those layers exciting – you don’t want to always play one level, and us women aren’t permanently strong and put-together. Real life hits and we have to deal with it. But Cameron’s always 10 steps ahead. She can play the game better than the men. Take away the sexiness and the glamour, and she’s just a really smart, sharp person. Us East Coast girls are determined, fearless and when we want something, we go and get it,” the Philadelphia-born screen star says.

“My mum and dad didn’t come from this world but saw how much I loved it and so invested in it, driving me to auditions, chaperoning me.” Jodie Comer started going to a local drama school at the age of 11, and was soon getting small roles in shows such as Holby City and Waterloo Road. “I wasn’t very studious, but when I was out on a job, that was when I came alive.” She decided to bypass drama school and started working after her A-levels, getting her first major role aged 18 in Channel 4’s ‘My Mad Fat Diary.’ “Part of me has always felt like a bit of a fraud for that. I had an insecurity about not being classically trained,” she says. “When people make me speak about [the canonical] works, Ithink I’m not familiar with that, or I don’t enjoy that, and it feels taboo to say so.” I ask if she’s read any Shakespeare: “I am trying!”

“’Shall we go Nineties?’ my husband asked me the other week. What he meant by this was something almost laughably benign, a solution to an issue that didn’t even exist when we were, in fact, in the Nineties: shall we leave our phones at home when we leave the house? We have been doing this more regularly in an effort to extricate ourselves from the endless churn of doomscrolling and social media, and have implemented an “in house” version, where we leave our smartphones on the table by the front door, approaching them only when we need to contact someone – treating it much in the same way as a landline.”

“The irony is not lost on us, that we picked up this idea of ‘going Nineties’ from Instagram, where I have seen a growing surge of interest in the idea of retreating away from an overwhelmingly online world of AI slop, misinformation and brain rot in favour of ‘a simpler time’.”
