Roxana Rios (*1994 Hannover) setzt sich in der vom MdbK beauftragten Serie Ode to Eris in Form von fotografisch-performativen Neuauffassungen mit ausgewählten Werken der Dauerausstellung auseinander. Rios‘ künstlerische Praxis zeichnet sich durch die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit historisch gewachsenen Narrativen und ganz besonders mit den Verbindungen zwischen Bild- und Wissensproduktion aus – also letztlich mit der Frage, wie sich bestimmte Bildmuster in der Porträtmalerei, beispielsweise Geschlechterstereotype, bis heute fortgeschrieben und verfestigt haben. In 𝘖𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘴, I relate my analysis of culturally constructed body relations to works in the permanent exhibition and collection of the Museum of Fine Arts @mdbkleipzig Based on my core interest in corporality, I have examined the collection with regard to historical representations of status, gender and narration. In 𝘖𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘴, I take up selected paintings to reflect on their embodiments as well as their contextual backgrounds and connections. How do ideas, roles, power relations or stories become visible in the image? How is the work embedded in cultural, historical and social contexts, what meanings and symbols does it convey – and how can these be linked to contemporary discourses?

The series translates historically developed physicality into a photographic-performative reinterpretation that combines strategies of reconstruction, subversion, appropriation and homage. For example, Klinger’s 𝘒𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘢, a metaphor for the systematic invisibility of non-hegemonic forms of knowledge, is staged as an actively gazing figure. In the appropriation of Ferdinand Bol’s 𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘔𝘢𝘯 the construction of gendered markers is understood and subverted as performance, and Ribot Theodule Augustin’s 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 is read in the context of gossip as informal, subversive knowledge transfer and resistant practice.

The series thus examines both historiography through the museum as a place of institutional knowledge production and social arrangements based on physical attributes. 𝘌𝘳𝘪𝘴, the goddess of chaos, is taken beyond her one-dimensional portrayal as a troublemaker and symbolises rebellion against oppressive structures, while her feelings are recognised as legitimate affects in response to exclusion and oppression.

🍂 Theme: Autumn Transitions

As the season shifts, we invite you to tune into cycles of change, shedding, slowing down, and softening. Together we’ll explore what it means to move through transitions with care, warmth, and presence.

🕯 We’ll begin punctually at 7:00 PM with an opening circle and a grounding body scan.
If you can’t arrive on time, we kindly ask you to join us after 19:40, once the shared practice has ended.

💜 If this is your first time joining the Wellness Space, we highly recommend arriving at 19:00 to be part of the intentional opening of the space.

After a somatic arrival, we’ll move into the sauna, relax, listen to music, share food, offer and receive massage/bodywork, and simply be together.

Around 10:00 PM, we’ll close the sauna, clean together, and say goodbye.

♿ Accessibility:
The studio is wheelchair accessible.
The sauna is on the ground floor but has a very narrow door.
Unfortunately, the shower is not wheelchair accessible.
