IN CONVERSATION /

In Conversation with Liz Nielsen at Olympic Studios

Join us for a captivating evening as Kathlene Fox-Davies - art-historian, curator and founder of London-based gallery, Black Box Projects - sits down in conversation with internationally renowned artist Liz Nielsen, whose innovative work is redefining the boundaries of contemporary photography.

Liz Nielsen’s practice is a contemporary application of one of the best-known avant-garde photographic processes — the photogram — first mastered by Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy in the early twentieth century. Working without a camera, each of Nielsen’s unique images are created in her studio using handmade negatives and ‘found’ light sources. She describes her process as “painting with light”, referencing the performative nature of its creation and the deep interaction between light, colour, and form.

This intimate conversation will explore the artist’s creative process, experimental techniques, and evolving photo-based practice, alongside a virtual tour of her New York studio. Liz will also discuss upcoming exhibitions, public commissions, and her recent monograph, featuring original texts by Martin Barnes (V&A) and Sarah Allen (South London Gallery).

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to engage with one of the most exciting and original voices in contemporary art today.

Booking essential, space limited.

BECOME A PATRON /

Brendan Barry’s Book Kickstarter Campaign

Black Box Projects is pleased to present a unique opportunity to become a patron in support of artist Brendan Barry’s upcoming publication “Flowers with Bea”.

This series was born during the 2020 lockdown where idle hours outdoors with the artist’s young family inspired Brendan Barry to capture the wildflowers he collected on his daily walks with his daughter and immortalise the arrangements in the form of long exposure camera obscura photographs. The resulting images are deeply saturated in colour and texture, holding memory of this quiet time in recent history, the innocence of early parenthood and a young family, whilst being linked to the historical science and wonder of photographic technology as well as a centuries-old tradition of still life in visual arts.

GOST Books is taking the story and images of Brendan Barry’s “Wildflowers Picked on Walks with Bea” and publishing Barry’s first monograph. This is where we need your help. We are offering an opportunity to support Brendan Barry and this book project, whilst also getting some added benefits of artist prints or studio experiences based on the levels of patron support for this project. Help us get this book out into the world (and get some epic artist offered prints and experiences in return!)

Full details of this Kickstarter campaign to support Brendan Barry’s publication can be found via the kickstarter link in our bio, or DM / email the gallery for further information about the artist and the Flowers with Bea series. info@blackboxprojects.art

CAST AWAY / VICTORIA MARQUES PINTO

Imagine a world defined by what we discard: memories intertwined with man-made waste; our bodies undisguisable from the plastic-nature of modern life…

Artist Victoria Marques Pinto explores the dystopian realities of the human impact on our natural world in her series Lost Paradise where she incorporates found plastic waste as collage elements into her archival family photographs. The waste has been collected from the very locations featured in her images, resulting in jarring, surrealistic and tongue-in-cheek remaking’s of the artist’s fond childhood memories.

Marques Pinto suggests a world where identity is obscured by the consequences of our consumerism and our natural world is marred by the waste we discard.

Each work in the Lost Paradise series is unique, featuring plastic that has been collected by the artist from her beach clean-ups. The photographic collages of Victoria Marques Pinto are presented in artist-designed, handmade frames with museum UV glaze.

TURNING POINT /

For there is a boundary to looking.
And the world that is looked at so deeply
wants to flourish in love.
Work of the eyes is done, now
go and do heart-work
on all the images imprisoned within you; for you
overpowered them: but even now you don’t know them.
Learn, inner man, to look at your inner woman,
the one attained from a thousand
natures, the merely attained but
not yet beloved form.

Turning-Point

Joanne Dugan / Persistent Awakening

Where the earlier Turning Point series found beauty in the chaos and light from the darkness, Joanne Dugan’s later work is defined by meditative repetition and reoccurring forms constructed from abstracted shadows and structured grid lines. The abstracted compositions in each small work brought together by the structure and order of the grid allows for the serially of her work and surprising movement within the rhythm of the repetition.

Joanne Dugan’s most recent work has taken on a decidedly painterly quality within her cameraless photographic compositions.

Perhaps one of the most ambitious pieces by the artist in our gallery collection, Transcendence #2 is a masterwork of deceptive simplicity. Here Dugan presents a composition of movement, light and serenity brought together from 128 individual photographic works.

Image: Joanne Dugan, Transcendence #2, 2019, Mounted collage of 128 individually cut, handmade 1” x 7” silver gelatin photographs on a 32” x 37.75” 8-ply museum board, framed in a handmade white box frame with museum glass, Unique

Joanne Dugan / Turning Point

Photos That Make Light A Subject

“As a fine artist, I only work in analog,” the New York-based photographer Joanne Dugan says. “To me, photography is film, and the alchemy of silver and light and chemicals is still really important.” And like analog photographs themselves, her “Turning Point” series was born in the dark. Dugan began the project in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, while she was sitting in her apartment at the edge of the blackout grid — the view out front was lit, but out to the sides it was dark. “There was an odd peacefulness that that came over me as I roamed around the city in a state of wonder,” she says. “I had this epiphany that it is okay to turn my lens only to the light itself, rather than the subjects.” The fragility of light became her focus as she traveled the city, often by bike, layering her images with up to 20 multiple exposures. “The work is an homage to the traditional process,” she says, “but brings a modern viewpoint.”

The pairing we never knew we needed, art and a disco ball! It was a pleasure welcoming Macarena Rojas Osterling to SW13 this week to talk all things art and her practice. We got to see and (gasp!) touch art, all under the sparkly, twinkly glow of the lights from the mirror ball. Thanks @macarenarojasstudio for sharing your evening with us, it was pure magic! @blackboxprojects @kittyfd @carriescottcurates @olympicstudios

Looking back at an incredible evening spent with the inimitable artist, Macarena Rojas Osterling, as she shared insight into her practice which is deeply rooted in personal identity, cultural influences and the duality of being both an artist and a mother. It was a special night amongst friends new and old and an exciting launch to what will be a landmark year for the artist, with her first monograph being released next week, an upcoming gallery exhibition in March and a museum show later this year. Thank you @macarenarojasstudio for sharing your time and expertise with us. Thank you also to @saskia.vidler and @abra___arba for photographing the evening, and @carriescottcurates and @olympicstudios for co-hosting the evening with me and @blackboxprojects #macarenarojasosterling #bbp_art #olympicartclub #femaleartist #peruvianartist #worksonpaper #blackboxprojects

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
