Parekawa explains the WHERE & WHY

Throughout the 1980s, the humble Wellington venue The New Depot evolved into what we now know as Taki Rua Theatre

A home that has held space for Māori and Pasifika creatives since the earliest days of the Wellington arts scene.

Taki Rua has always been there for rangatahi.
That hasn’t changed.

Our wānanga series is about reconnecting our young people with each other, and with te whare whakaruruhau o Te Haukāinga.
The creative, cultural, and spiritual shelter that has nurtured generations.

“It’s pretty hard to miss our Rangatira ki runga i ngā pakiwai o Te Haukainga, even if you’ve only spent one day there! I feel them in every moment.”

The documentary film that Parekawa speaks about, Taki Rua Theatre – Breaking Barriers, dives into the whakapapa and legacy of the ūkaipō our people built from the ground up.

It blends archival footage, interviews, and fresh dramatic reenactments to show how this space became a movement.

Prominent figures who shaped the company’s history feature throughout the film;
Rena Owen, Briar Grace-Smith, Jim Moriarty, Hone Kouka, Mere Boynton —
alongside foundational pioneers who have since passed on;
Wi Kuki Kaa, Tungia Baker, Rona Bailey, Keri Kaa, and Nancy Brunning.

This is the whenua we stand on.
This is why Te Hau Whakaako exists.
This is where our rangatahi return to learn, to lead, and to carry the legacy forward.

Now’s the time to get behind Māori creativity — every donation is matched dollar for dollar, helping these kaupapa go even further before funding closes at 10am on 28 May.

First and foremost, we’d like to thank you all for your continued support throughout every phase that has brought us to this moment. This film would not have been possible without it.

Now as many of you know, our film has been chosen as an official selection for the Swedish International Film Festival and we have made the decision to try and get us there to represent Aotearoa and our Pacific communities at the festival held in Stockholm. We realise that the only barrier we have is financial, which of course is a constant barrier for many independent and emerging film makers.

We will be launching a fundraising campaign to get the Director, Veisinia Moalapau’u, as well as the Director of Photography, Brianna Williams to the film festival in Stockholm in November. These funds will cover only our return flights to and from Sweden, which has an estimated cost of $3,500 per person.

We acknowledge how ambitious this campaign is, but we understand the importance of representation especially as young women in film. Our intention in travelling to Sweden is to show up for our community and to share that love we have here for film. We feel that is the first step in launching our careers into meaningful contributions to Pacific film.

The boosted campaign is currently up and running in a ‘seed funding’ phase before it officially goes live on Friday, 22nd May and will run until the 10th July, giving us about 6 weeks to raise these funds to book flights and accommodation well in advance. First and foremost, we’d like to thank you all for your continued support throughout every phase that has brought us to this moment. This film would not have been possible without it.

Now as many of you know, our film has been chosen as an official selection for the Swedish International Film Festival and we have made the decision to try and get us there to represent Aotearoa and our Pacific communities at the festival held in Stockholm. We realise that the only barrier we have is financial, which of course is a constant barrier for many independent and emerging film makers.

We will be launching a fundraising campaign to get the Director, Veisinia Moalapau’u, as well as the Director of Photography, Brianna Williams to the film festival in Stockholm in November. These funds will cover only our return flights to and from Sweden, which has an estimated cost of $3,500 per person.

We acknowledge how ambitious this campaign is, but we understand the importance of representation especially as young women in film. Our intention in travelling to Sweden is to show up for our community and to share that love we have here for film. We feel that is the first step in launching our careers into meaningful contributions to Pacific film.

The boosted campaign is currently up and running in a ‘seed funding’ phase before it officially goes live on Friday, 22nd May and will run until the 10th July, giving us about 6 weeks to raise these funds to book flights and accommodation well in advance.
