“Enkeltje Bermuda” takes the viewer to a place where all sorts of lost things can be found again, from mangroves to beaches to traditions. It is a world of sculptures, some playfully reflecting on the losses we endure, others calling for a more mindful appreciation of our surroundings. They encourage viewers to marvel at the beauty of small things and to care for the life around us.

Additionally, IBB students will present four short films created under the guidance of guest artist Jacob van der Zwan @j_and_b.art. These films, ranging from thrilling scenes to humorous dialogues, bring Curaçao’s stories to life.

Next to these cute encounters with creatures and lovely views I worked really hard on an exhibition that will take place this Thursday, 12 December at 19.00u @ibbcuracao .

“Enkeltje Bermuda” takes the viewer to a place where all sorts of lost things can be found again, from mangroves to beaches to traditions. It is a world of sculptures, some playfully reflecting on the losses we endure, others calling for a more mindful appreciation of our surroundings. They encourage viewers to marvel at the beauty of small things and to care for the life around us.

Additionally, IBB students will present four short films created under the guidance of guest artist Jacob van der Zwan @j_and_b.art. These films, ranging from thrilling scenes to humorous dialogues, bring Curaçao’s stories to life.

The exhibition will take place in IBB’s stunning gallery space at Mohikanenweg 8. Parking is available at the Capriles Clinic parking lot; from there, the IBB grounds are accessible on foot. Admission is free.

Locatie: Het Blauwe Veld, Kleine oord 170, Arnhem

In mijn stadstuintje zweeft en zoemt er van alles voorbij. De aangeplante tijm en wilde marjolein doen het goed bij de bestuivers. Met de waarnemingen app 'ObsIdentify' ga ik vaak op pad om alle kleine beestjes te determineren. Het is leuk om te leren over al die gekke, gekleurde bezoekers en door foto’s te maken en te uploaden draag ik bij aan het in kaart brengen van soorten.
Insecten spelen al verschillende jaren een grote rol in mijn werk. Zo maak ik werk geïnspireerd op - en met verwondering voor insecten, vanuit artikelen die ik lees of ervaringen en kennis die ik opdoe tijdens outdoor avontuurtjes. Soms, wanneer ik insecten dood aan tref, uitgedroogd op een vensterbank, of verpletterd op het fietspad, neem ik ze mee naar mijn studio waar ik ze een nieuw leven geef als (onderdeel van een) sculptuur, ingegoten in epoxy.

Het project 'Buurt Bugs' is ontstaan uit een verlangen om meer te betekenen voor deze kleine wezens waar ik zoveel inspiratie uit haal. Het project begon met een zoektocht naar informatie over kwetsbare insecten die in Arnhemse stadstuinen of zelfs op een balkon voor kunnen komen. De tweede fase van het project was een inzameling van materiaal, namelijk de kleding van buurtbewoners. Daarna volgde de maakfase van de insect sculpturen/knuffels, de keramische beschermreuzen en het bouwen van de websitepagina, waar ik momenteel druk mee bezig ben. Tijdens de expositie zullen buurtbewoners die kleding gedoneerd hebben dit kledingstuk kunnen herkennen in een specifiek insect en zo hopelijk meer feeling krijgen met dit kleine wonder wezen. Op een website pagina zullen zij, maar natuurlijk ook alle andere bezoekers, vervolgens informatie kunnen vinden over hoe ze dit kwetsbare insect zouden kunnen helpen, door bijvoorbeeld het zaaien van bepaalde planten of het laten liggen van takjes en hout voor schuilplaatsen.
Dus lieve buurtbewoner, kunstliefhebbers, insecten bewonderaars, voel je welkom om op 11 april of daarna een kijkje te nemen bij het Blauwe Veld en je te laten informeren en inspireren.

Introducing our second @supermarketart participant @bugboi.chant 🐜

NL Chant van Lieshout (die/diens) haalt inspiratie uit kleine, alledaagse en vaak onbegrepen dingen. Insecten, veel voorkomend maar zelden geliefd, spelen een centrale rol in diens werk. Hun wereld biedt een ontsnapping aan de soms overweldigende realiteit. Ook de queer-community en fetish-scene keren terug in het werk, in samenhang met een persoonlijke zoektocht naar genderexpressie en seksualiteit. De sculpturen en installaties - vaak uitgewerkt in keramiek, epoxyhars, textiel en verzamelde voorwerpen - zijn gebaseerd op persoonlijke en locatie-specifieke verhalen die gelaagd met poëtische humor uitnodigen tot verwondering. De felle kleuren en figuratieve, speelse elementenbrengen de toeschouwer naar een magische realiteit, waarin kinderlijke naïviteit, plezier en absurditeit samenkomen. Spelend met ongemak legt het werk kwetsbaarheden bloot en geeft het een stem aan ongehoorde of ongewenste wezens. De outcast wordt op een sokkel geplaatst in een fantasiewereld, waarin diversiteit wordt gevierd.

The small, everyday, misunderstood or incomprehensible things inspire Chant van Lieshout (they/them - 1994, Geldrop, NL) the most. Insects, as most common but least appreciated animals, therefore play a central role in the work of this artist. Zooming in on their small reality also offers an opportunity to escape from everyday life.
Through personal and site-specific stories, interwoven with poëtic humor, the artist builds worlds in which sculptures - often made of ceramics, textile, epoxy resin and collected (audiovisual) materials - invite wonder.
Bright colors and toy elements of the often figurative work transport the viewer to another, almost magical reality, in which childlike naivety, fun and absurdity blends. Playing with discomfort, the work exposes vulnerabilities and gives a voice to unheard or unwanted beings. The outcast is placed on a pedestal in a fantasy world where diversity is celebrated.

Ze verdiepen zich in keramiek, glazuren, glas-in-lood, brandschilderen en textieltechnieken zoals haken, weven en borduren. Ook maken ze hun eigen klei en trekken met een lokale fotograaf — met veel ecologische kennis van het gebied — het landschap in om planten, ecosystemen en de fragiele balans tussen mens en natuur te leren kennen.

Met een speelse, onderzoekende blik richten ze zich op de relatie tussen mens en dier. Momenteel bouwen ze allerlei vormen van kleine altaartjes om de lokale dieren en natuur te eren. Daarnaast experimenteren ze met glas fusing, zilverklei en het maken van maskers en kostuums die spelen met het dierlijke in de mens. Ze doorbreken oude patronen en manieren van doen binnen deze vaak vrouwelijke ambachten, en vieren feminiene kracht voorbij vaste gendergrenzen.

Chant van Lieshout en Vera Meulendijks kennen elkaar van jump! Ze deden vorig jaar allebei mee met ons talenttraject. Op dit moment verblijven ze op duo-residentie bij Arteventura in Spanje, waar ze midden in de natuur werken en lokale tradities onderzoeken.
