A pioneer of abstraction who long remained in the shadows, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint created, well before the established figures of modern art, paintings of exceptional boldness, combining geometry, vivid colors and organic motifs at the intersection of art, science and spirituality.

The Grand Palais and the Centre Pompidou dedicate the very first monographic exhibition of her work in France, featuring the cycle of the "Paintings for the Temple" and the monumental series "The Ten Largest", presented here for the first time in France. A unique opportunity to (re)discover an artist the entire world now considers unmissable.

Derrière cette gouache d'Henri Matisse, une histoire qui commence à Los Angeles 🌿⁣

Frances et Sidney Brody, grands collectionneurs américains, rêvent d'une décoration en céramique pour le patio de leur villa californienne. Matisse leur soumet pas moins de quatre projets avant qu'ils ne choisissent celui-ci. La céramique est finalement installée en août 1955.⁣
⁣
Dans ce bouquet d'algues qui semble jaillir et se déployer dans tous les sens, Matisse glisse une idée empruntée au philosophe Henri Bergson : la vie comme une énergie qui explose, se divise et part dans toutes les directions à la fois. Une façon de peindre le mouvement lui-même.⁣

Behind this gouache by Henri Matisse, a story that begins in Los Angeles 🌿⁣

Frances and Sidney Brody, prominent American collectors, dreamed of a ceramic decoration for the patio of their Californian villa. Matisse submitted no fewer than four projects before they finally found the one. The ceramic was installed in August 1955.⁣
⁣
In this bouquet of seaweed that seems to burst and spread in every direction, Matisse slips in an idea borrowed from philosopher Henri Bergson: life as an energy that explodes, divides and shoots off in all directions at once. A way of painting movement itself.⁣

A rare look inside the world of Constantin Brancusi.

Ariane Coulondre, curator at @centrepompidou, shares how the exhibition brings Brancusi’s studio to life — including a partial reconstruction of his legendary Paris atelier, presented outside France for the first time since 1957.

Developed in close collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, the exhibition explores the relationship between sculpture, space, and display.

Dès le 6 mai, la première grande exposition en France consacrée à Hilma af Klint ouvre ses portes au Grand Palais !

Hilma af Klint est une artiste en avance sur son temps. Dès 1906, bien avant Kandinsky, Malevitch ou Mondrian, Hilma af Klint crée des peintures abstraites d’une audace exceptionnelle. Formes géométriques, couleurs vives, compositions monumentales : ses œuvres annoncent déjà les grands courants du 20e siècle. Convaincue que son art ne serait compris de son vivant, elle choisit de garder ses œuvres abstraites secrètes, avec la consigne de ne les révéler que vingt ans après sa mort.

Une exposition exceptionnelle pour découvrir une figure incontournable, capable de transcender les frontières entre art, science et spiritualité.

From May 6, the first major exhibition in France dedicated to Hilma af Klint opens at the Grand Palais!

Hilma af Klint was an artist ahead of her time. As early as 1906—well before Kandinsky, Malevich, or Mondrian—she created abstract paintings of remarkable boldness. Geometric forms, vivid colors, monumental compositions: her works already foreshadowed the major artistic movements of the 20th century. Convinced that her art would not be understood during her lifetime, she chose to keep her abstract works secret, with instructions that they should only be revealed twenty years after her death.

An exceptional exhibition introducing a major figure whose work transcends the boundaries between art, science, and spirituality.
