So this was a fun assignment. Headed out to #oakland recently to meet with @omjvinyls who runs the #afghan Cassette Archive. I spent the afternoon with our reporter @christopher_alam talking with Omid about how he got started building his collection of Afghan music, and what it means both for him and for Afghans living here. Much of this legacy is under threat by the Taliban which has banned nearly all forms of artistic expression. The fact that these tapes, many of which were made in the 1960s and 70s, “survived war and conflict and made their way here is very …I have no words to explain it,” said Omid. BART remains the backbone of the Bay Area’s transit system, moving hundreds of thousands of riders and connecting the region’s economy. But that role is under strain as the system faces financial and operational challenges.

Ridership has not fully recovered, leaving a major funding gap. Without new revenue, officials warn of service cuts that could reduce frequency and reliability across the system.

At the same time, aging infrastructure and rising costs continue to pressure the network. Investments are needed to maintain safety, modernize equipment, and keep trains running efficiently.

The future of BART now hinges on whether sustainable funding can be secured, with the risk that without it, the region’s core transit system could weaken at a critical moment.

The rise of AI has added another layer of uncertainty, reshaping how employers screen candidates and how applicants prepare. Job seekers are learning to tailor resumes not just for people, but for algorithms.

Even with these challenges, optimism persists. Many graduates continue to focus on human-centered work, adaptability, and persistence as they navigate a job market that is tough, but not without opportunity.

From Brexit and the Great Replacement to Unite the Right, the past decade has seen a growing embrace of far-right movements on both sides of the Atlantic, one defined by a shared commitment to reversing decades of global migration.

And despite rifts over US tariffs and war in Iran, experts say that commitment is hardening as once fringe ideologies have increasingly moved to the centers of power.

“European border policy and migration policy have been far harder edged than American border policy for a long time,” says journalist Ali Winston, who covers European and American far-right extremism and federal law enforcement. “They are far, far further down that road than we are.”

Nearly two weeks into the U.S.–Israel war with Iran, bombs continue to fall and the conflict shows no clear end. The escalation has already shaken oil markets and raised fears of wider regional instability.

After the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and ongoing U.S.–Israeli bombardment, emotions within the community range from celebration to deep anxiety about what comes next.

Voices in the diaspora say the moment is complicated. Some see the end of Khamenei as a chance for change. Others fear instability, civilian suffering, and the possibility of a power vacuum or civil conflict inside Iran.

Debates now center on who could lead Iran’s future. Figures like Reza Pahlavi are discussed, but many question whether any exile leader truly understands today’s Iran or can unify the country’s deeply divided factions.

Negotiations with the school district continue, while SFUSD schools will remain closed Thursday.
