It is with complete honor and pleasure to share THE RIVER. My first short film and director debut.

The film explores Ethiopian culture and women’s experiences, heralding beauty while shedding light on systemic barriers. It serves as a poignant commentary on global water accessibility, particularly highlighting the gender-based violence women encounter at water sources. This story serves as a microcosm of the global issue of water accessibility, particularly impacting women who often face gender-based violence at water sites.

Produced and filmed in Ethiopia by @qenefilms, THE RIVER was made possible through funding from the @sheamoisture Grant Program, supported by @mstinaknowles, and in partnership with @amaka.studio supporting its film submission run.

Special thank you to my DOP @tedosteffera and EP @fraythelight for bringing my vision to life.

Join multi-disciplinary artist Chyna Cassell in conversation with artists Herrana Addisu and Mahlet Traore after a screening of their respective short films:

The River and Black Sheep: Brown Eyes

The River pays homage to culture and the lived experiences of women through the lens of Ethiopia, drawing inspiration from Herrana’s childhood home, Kebena. The film not only celebrates the art of beauty but also examines the systemic barriers women face—particularly in relation to forced marriage, access to education, and water scarcity.

A Qene Films production, the film was created with support from the SheaMoisture Blueprint Grant, an extension of the brand’s 2023 campaign that reflects its ongoing commitment to empowering the next generation of Black women trailblazers and creatives who shape and push the boundaries of culture within and beyond the Black community.

Black Sheep: Brown Eyes ጥቁር በግ : ቡናማ አይኖች, is an experimental fashion film and music video. The surrealist dreamscape is a love story about radical self-acceptance that leads to collective transcendence. Centered on DONY’s braided collection, the film weaves together textiles and sounds from Ethiopia, Oromiyaa, and Mali to honor tradition, land, and Trans/queer ancestry and futurism.

On 23 February, Living Room Session presents Have You Met returns with a curated short film screening highlighting three visionary directors, as part of Soho House’s Black History Month programming.

The evening will include a screening of Welcome Home by award-winning film director, multidisciplinary artist, social impact strategist, and founder of Chucha Studios @chucha.studios, Herrana Addisu @herranathegreat_.

Welcome Home is a visual storytelling series by Chucha Studios in partnership with Black Archives @blackarchives.co, dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black immigrants. Through powerful imagery and personal narratives, this series explores themes of resilience, strength, and community, offering a deeply personal yet universally resonant look into the Black immigrant experience.
