Join @cinea_be and @decinema_ in early July for ZOMERFILMCOLLEGE 2026: a week of in-depth lectures by internationally renowned critics and academics, Q&As with filmmakers, and screenings of both original 35mm copies and recent digital restorations!

This 31st (!) edition features two diverse programme strands. HEARTS OF THE WORLD: GLOBAL FLOWS OF MELODRAMA, presented in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, and demonstrates how melodrama’s versatility allowed it to travel the world. With lectures by Professor Ben Singer (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and Dr. Viola Shafik (freelance filmmaker/lecturer/researcher).

In CINEMA OF POETRY: TEXTURE AND MOOD IN NARRATIVE FILM, we look for the elusive qualities—mystery, mood, texture, sensuality, etc.—that constitute ‘the poetic’ in narrative film. Guest speakers include ZFC habitués and film critics Adrian Martin and Cristina Álvarez López.

⤷ PASSES ARE NOW ON SALE via cinea.be! You can attend both programmes or either sub-programme. Tickets for separate lectures and screenings will become available at a later date. Film students and unemployed people can book their tickets at the reduced rate.

The lectures will be entirely in English, and all screenings will have English subtitles. More practical info via cinea.be!

Subscribe to our newsletter(s) to receive a notification when the full line-up of screenings and lectures is released.

"I belong to no one."

Meet Adela Sequeyro: the pioneer who wrote, directed, and starred in the very first Mexican sound film directed by a woman. In NOBODY’S WIFE (1937), Sequeyro shatters the 1930s status quo. Her protagonist, Ana María, doesn't exist to "belong" to a man as a mother or wife; she is an active subject seeking a bohemian life of romance, risk, and radical autonomy.

Sequeyro's film is a bold declaration of independence. With expressive close-ups and a sharp sense of humor, Sequeyro dissects masculine poses and romantic claims, proving that desire should never be the price for security. Long forgotten by official history, this film remains a breathtakingly modern statement on female self-determination.

On March 18 NOBODY’S WIFE, part of our Stronger Than Love: ¡Too Much Mexican Melodrama! program, will be introduced by Bart Versteirt (@cinea_be) and archive activist Camilla Baier (@invisiblewomen_archives, @camilla_baier), who works to close the gender gap in film history and bring pioneers like Sequeyro back into the spotlight.

It's been almost three months since the 4K restoration of 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙞screened at @cinea_be's Zomerfilmcollege 2025. If you've missed it then or during its short theatrical run in September, be sure to catch Satyajit Ray's debut at @cinemaritcs!

For his Apu trilogy, Satyajit Ray drew on the rich narrative tradition of Indian culture. With this strong narrative foundation, he was able to deal more subtly with staging, mise-en-scène and music. It is therefore, and with good reason, that Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of 𝙇𝙖𝙙𝙧𝙞 𝙙𝙞 𝙗𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚, remarked that 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙞 “is finally the neorealist cinema that the Italians never succeeded in creating”.

PATHER PANCHALI, October 2nd, 19:00, Cinema RITCSBrussel

It is therefore, and with good reason, that Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of 𝙇𝙖𝙙𝙧𝙞 𝙙𝙞 𝙗𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚, remarked that 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙞 “is finally the neorealist cinema that the Italians never succeeded in creating”.

After our week-long focus on Satyajit Ray at the @cinea_be Zomerfilmcollege 2025 back in July, during which we screened 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙞 and 𝘼𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙟𝙞𝙩𝙤, we are now happy to finally screen the third and final installment of Ray’s Apu Trilogy, 𝘼𝙥𝙪𝙧 𝙎𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙖𝙧.

We follow the now 23-year-old Apu, who barely makes ends meet as an idealistic and struggling writer. This lack of financial means has led Apu to give up his dreams and accept a meager living. But life is unexpected, just like the arrival of Aparna, the sister of Apu’s university friend Pulu. Apu and Aparna grow closer and build a future together.

It's been ten years since we last dedicated part of our Zomerfilmcollege to Jean-Luc Godard, but JLG tends to be inescapable, so he has popped up frequently over the years.

It goes without saying that he couldn't be excluded from @cineriogent's 'Ex Machina' series, celebrating cinematically bold films, each highlighting an exceptional use of one filmic device. You could probably choose a Godard film for every one of these devices, but the choice fell on the close-up, one of Godard's most intricate formal strategies. And if you want to talk about Godard's use of the close-up, you can't ignore 𝙑𝙞𝙫𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙖 𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙢: 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢 𝙚𝙣 𝙙𝙤𝙪𝙯𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙭 (1962).

This film consists of—as its title announces—12 'tableaux', each tableau exploring one or more ways to film the human face, using a flimsy B-movie plot as an excuse. The face in question being that of Anna Karina, Godard's then partner, making this film a love letter to the human face, the face of Anna Karina and the face of cinema itself.

One of our two topics at this year's Zomerfilmcollege was the work of Satyajit Ray, who appeared on the film-historical stage in the 1950s. Indian film history of course goes back a lot further. Now, @cinea_be has once again joined forces with Pelliculot to dive deeper into film history, all the way to 1928 and the final years of silent film.

In the 1920s, Indian actor-producer Himansu Rai and German director Franz Osten collaborated on three films with Indian casts: 𝙇𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙨𝙞𝙖 (1925), 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙯 (1928) and 𝘼 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙞𝙘𝙚 (1929). 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙯, a visually stunning historical love story about the construction of the Taj Mahal, is considered a masterpiece.

The film was an international co-production with British and German support, but with an Indian aesthetic. Rai produced and starred in the film, while Osten's cinematography captured the splendour of North India's landscapes and Mughal architecture.

Osten, fascinated by India, later made sixteen non-silent films for Rai's Bombay Talkies. 𝙎𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙯 was his first major success in India and Europe, thanks in part to its compelling narrative and beautiful imagery. The film remains a monument to early Indian cinema.

SHIRAZ: A ROMANCE OF INDIA, soon at STOM!

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
