Before filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. won his BAFTA for Outstanding Debut last weekend, he was preparing to release this special short, a sprawling ode to South
London.
This project first came about when he heard @cktrl s album, “Spirit”, last year and was floored—and knew it needed a visual language to match its cinematic scale.
In the resulting short film shot in 16mm, the pair have brought that vision to life together.
This is a film that toes the line between documentary and narrative, and celebrates neighbourhood and the rhythms of everyday life in South London. Friends for over a decade, their closeness runs through the piece; rooted in lived relationships, it resists spectacle in favor of quiet intimacy.
