In this small-scale statue, a complex crouching pose has been compressed into a two-dimensional composition. It is a decorative work based on a famous large, fully three-dimensional statue of Aphrodite shown crouching at her bath that was created in the third century b.c. In the late Hellenistic period, figures such as this were designed to be seen from only one or two vantage points. They fit perfectly between columns in peristyle court or garden settings.

Tate Britian rotunda

The octagonal domed glass ceiling, combined with the neoclassical open archways, create a sense of a porthole to another world.

The space used to be the Libary for the Tate & was open to anyone who wanted to use it or study there. In 1993 I wrote my thesis on @jamesturell here. So lucky 🍀

The ancient Egyptians connected the behavior of animals in nature with the divine sphere. Baboons vocalize loudly at dawn, which the Egyptians interpreted as praise for the rising sun. Here, the animal stands on its hind legs and extends its paws like a human worshipper in an adoring pose. The king’s hands on his kilt form a different expression of praise.
Although baboons typically represent the god Thoth, those grouped together with upraised paws have roles related to the sun cult. Adoring baboons frequently populate illustrations with narratives involving the afterlife.
