“The Opus” - the story. Over the years I have created a vast body of work spanning multiple genres of dance. I have many personal favorites from my repertoire, but I must say, this is the creative accomplishment I’m most proud of, to date.

My vision was a cold, Saturday night out at the opera house, circa 1895. Wild, funky, quirky, classic & modern - spanning centuries to present day was the challenge. I wanted to fuse multiple genres of dance and create a “live movie” for the stage. This piece was designed for the @sheffielddance 80th Anniversary celebration, “Showtime 2023”, so I knew I had to put my everything into the creative process.

For 5.5 months, I developed this piece inside the studio from the ground floor up. I mixed and remixed every note of music and spent countless hours playing with choreography that would push my creative boundaries beyond their limits. The final touches would come inside of a dark, hazy theater 2 days before opening night in which I designed and conceptualized 20 dramatic lighting changes for this 4 minute piece. A huge thank you to my two amazing LD’s and Stage Manager, Craig Mayrose, Madeleine Mayrose and Sydney Bennefield, respectively, for your incredible knowledge, kindness and patience.

The end result was a cinematic experience for the audience, the dancers and myself. To my Sheffield Dancers, you knocked this one out of the park. Thank you for letting my imagination run wild and for your endless trust. “The Opus” was everything I had seen in my mind and so much more. You may even see a familiar face on stage. We are deeply saddened by the passing of a true legend in the dance world, Judy Rice. To know Judy was to know pure love & true exuberance for life and DANCE. Judy’s ballet classes were one of a kind — so joyous and full of the most contagious energy. It was a pleasure to spend time with her at @reveldanceconvention National Finals the past 2 summers in Orlando. Fly high, Miss Judy — you’re dancing with the angels now. 🪽
