After discussing our vision with my cinematographer, @noah.p.toaso, we agreed that shooting on film was the best choice. The inherent spontaneity of film added a unique quality to our story that’s difficult to replicate. When Siena first approached me with her vision for Down Bad, I suggested taking a more narrative story telling approach. I knew that film, specifically 16mm, would complement both Siena’s vision and my creative voice.

After further discussion with my cinematographer, Evan, we agreed that shooting on film would allow us, both practically and creatively, a lot of freedom to generate a beautiful image using just natural light and the very limited practical resources we had.

Logistically, shooting on film forced Evan and I to be intentional with our shots and proactive with our shot plan to use as much daylight as possible.

Shooting on film also fostered a serious, yet fun, work ethic on set. This was extremely important to me because I wanted the vibe on set to feel personal and intimate to ensure the comfortability of my actors.

After further discussion with my cinematographer, Evan, we agreed that shooting on film would allow us, both practically and creatively, a lot of freedom to generate a beautiful image using just natural light and the very limited practical resources we had.

Logistically, shooting on film forced Evan and I to be intentional with our shots and proactive with our shot plan to use as much daylight as possible.

Shooting on film also fostered a serious, yet fun, work ethic on set. This was extremely important to me because I wanted the vibe on set to feel personal and intimate to ensure the comfortability of my actors.

Thanks to an elite post production team of three, the project was rounded off perfectly.

When Siena first approached me with her vision for Down Bad, I suggested taking a more narrative story telling approach. I knew that film, specifically 16mm, would complement both Siena’s vision and my creative voice.

I knew from the very inception of the idea for the “The Watering Hole” that I wanted to shoot it on film because I wanted to both creatively and logistically challenge myself.

Because I had only a finite amount of film, I had to be creatively critical with how I visually told the story. This was extremely advantageous because I was forced to ask myself questions until I knew exactly what it is that I wanted and what I didn’t want.

I knew from the very inception of the idea for the “The Watering Hole” that I wanted to shoot it on film because I wanted to both creatively and logistically challenge myself.

Because I had only a finite amount of film, I had to be creatively critical with how I visually told the story. This was extremely advantageous because I was forced to ask myself questions until I knew exactly what it is that I wanted and what I didn’t want.

This helped me know exactly what the film was going to look and feel like to before I even shot it.

Without shooting on film, I fear that I wouldn’t have asked the necessary questions to guide the film in the direction I wanted it to go.

This personal challenge ultimately payed off and after countless late night production meetings, plenty of trips to the location, and waiting out weeks of heavy wind and rain, the day to actually shoot came.
