Crumbs! Finally dropping my solo project. When I was a kid I was obsessed with making tunes on a little Akai s-20 sampler and an Atari ST.Between cutting up samples and working the Atari floppy disks - I ended up trying to record my own drum loops- which resulted in me accepting that I should learn the drums first. Few years back I acquired a sampler once more and it was like being transported back to my teenage years. This was some kind of musical root I had rediscovered, and I realised how central those machines are to the way I approach drums, as if the drum kit was actually some kind of acoustic sampler all along. Sampling for me is a kind of cuisine. You chop and prepare the ingredients and then you stir them in loops over a hot volume of energy. Tang and crunch, the whole experience is about tasting as you go. I don’t shop for ingredients rather I scavenge through the digital deluge. And here it is - a musical offering to the you music gods who are free to discard these crumbs, as they will be blown away along with us in the winds of time- forgotten in the eternal memory - reduced to a training data set of the great mind. This is from the original vinyl sleeve where we discovered our name.
It was day 2 of our 3 day recording session that birthed Prophecy EP and Channel the Spirits.
Initially conceived as a ‘Soccer96 feat Shabaka’ record, it became apparent that as a trio we had made a new sound which should be honoured with a new name.
After a couple of hilarious suggestions from Max and Shabaka, I had the thought that a name may reveal itself to us if we were open to it, and later that day while searching through a bunch of records at the @totalrefreshmentcentre I found this, and felt an extreme resonance in the fabric of space time. I walked over to Shabaka, pointed at it silently and he nodded affirmatively, and shouted Betamax over excitedly and we all were in agreement:
The Comet is Coming 🪐

We then recorded ‘Star Exploding in Slow Motion’ which remains one of my favourite tracks we ever made.
