Congrats to the entire @cwsupermanandlois team for a much-deserved @saturnawards! I will be forever grateful to this wonderful show & the even more wonderful people behind it for giving me my start directing TV in the US. I learnt so much & made so many lasting friendships, no matter where my TV career takes me, all dots will connect back here. Such a shame this season is the last — but what a way to go out!

TV is nothing without 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 & 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙨. If there’s one thing this strike has exposed, it’s just how much their talent and sacrifices have been undervalued.

As former DGA pres. @pkcbarclay once put it, in the world of TV we directors are “𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴.” We can bring our favorite spice, but ultimately we’re always a guest in another person’s house. Well, those houses are built none more so than by the tireless work of the casts and scribes who pour their lives into creating the best show possible, episode after episode, season after season.

So in appreciation to the ones who make the real magic happen, I wanted to share some of my favorite scenes I had the (comparatively easy) job of directing in the marvelous kitchen that is @cwsupermanandlois. Not the flashy action and VFX sequences (which are of course tons of fun to shoot) but the scenes where it’s just the simplicity of great actors and great words telling the story. That’s honestly what I love most about the show — the moments these canonic characters feel grounded and human to the point we can see ourselves in them.

For someone like me, who grew up inhaling @superman comics and lore, the value of real people playing these beloved personas can never be replicated by AI. Nor could it ever match the meticulous story design and artistry of writer/showrunner @chipeyt and all the other brilliant minds/writers who make the series what it is (@gberlanti @fletcher4stunts @kriskorzec @rinamimoun55 & so many more).

These people love, live and breathe these characters in ways no machine ever can. That’s why when this strike ends, I hope it’s because they finally got the deal they deserve.

This one was the brainchild of a name you’ll want to remember: Kion Gozi (@kiongoziv), who co-wrote, starred in 𝘢𝘯𝘥 co-wrote the music — a triple threat indeed!

Joining him in the writer’s room were @londonmjones #skyproud #adriancano & #julietcoleman, who under the expert tutelage of writing instructor @devan_renea_23 delivered an absolutely knock-out script. It’s always an honor bringing these kids’ visions to life on-screen, and I try to remain as true to their words on the page as possible. Being the program’s first musical, that was quite a task and definitely came with its challenges: covid shutdowns, fire alarms and location switcheroos… but these kids never quit, so neither do we!

Accompanying us on the journey was the wonderful @justin_cornwell, who donated his versatile talents in front of the camera and behind the mic, inspiring the youth every step of the way, and even opened up his home studio so he and Kion could collaborate on the songs together. Well, it paid off…

This past weekend the film played at the @micheauxfilmfest in LA where Kion & Justin were rewarded with Best Music for their incredible efforts (swipe —> for pics!)

This one was the brainchild of a name you’ll want to remember: Kion Gozi (@kiongoziv), who co-wrote, starred in 𝘢𝘯𝘥 co-wrote the music — a triple threat indeed!

Joining him in the writer’s room were @londonmjones #skyproud #adriancano & #julietcoleman, who under the expert tutelage of writing instructor @devan_renea_23 delivered an absolutely knock-out script. It’s always an honor bringing these kids’ visions to life on-screen, and I try to remain as true to their words on the page as possible. Being the program’s first musical, that was quite a task and definitely came with its challenges: covid shutdowns, fire alarms and location switcheroos… but these kids never quit, so neither do we!

Accompanying us on the journey was the wonderful @justin_cornwell, who donated his versatile talents in front of the camera and behind the mic, inspiring the youth every step of the way, and even opened up his home studio so he and Kion could collaborate on the songs together. Well, it paid off…

Late to post on here, but this one was a fun challenge… @google wanted to showcase the benefits of their @googleworkspace tool with a spot that felt “continuous” but - with a SUPER tight deadline - we didn’t have the time or resources to do a true in-camera one-er, nor for any complex VFX transitions, etc. That meant having to show some restraint and figure out a simple but fun way to shoot this all out in a couple of days — then deliver a locked edit one week later. Eek! Thankfully I had a fantastic team and we somehow pulled it off. Kudos to all!
