My name is Andrew Nicholas Georg Lövgren, and I created Deaton Chris Anthony 10 years ago this May. I’ve waited many years for this moment, to tell the story of why I became a musician.

In 2014, I released a documentary called Symirroretry. I was 19, obsessed with a dark aesthetic. I removed all color from my life. I only listened to dark ambient music. Years in that place left me empty. Months into editing, mad at the progress of the film, I grabbed a CD box from my mother’s stash and found Mariah Carey’s 1990 debut. I remember laughing in the car, cringing at the cheesy sounds. But I came home feeling better. So I kept going on these long drives every day, listening to that album. I learned every lyric. I’d scream them in my car to no one but myself. It was my secret that got me through that time.

The day after my movie came out, still unhappy, my friend showed me a video about returning home. “No matter our success, as artists we must return home, which is the work. Make more work!” In that moment I thought, why the fuck was I escaping to Mariah Carey? Maybe that’s my next documentary. The next day I made a list in a notebook. The left side said “cool,” and the right side said “uncool.” Music, clothing, hairstyles, anything I could think of. That right column confused me. What is it about all of these things that makes me cringe? It must mean I don’t understand them. I thought, there has to be a guy out there who’s all of these attributes. Just rocks it. Wears all white and loves his bowl cut. What’s his story?

Thus, Deaton Chris Anthony was born. I embraced everything I thought was cringey and did that for 10 years. My life blossomed then. Finally, I had a right to do it all, cringey or not, because that was the point. I had a reason to be anything! I wiped my life from social media and made this account. I started experimenting with how Instagram could be used as a tool to tell a story. Almost like an interactive movie. If you haven’t already guessed, you all have been a part of the script. Deaton Chris Anthony. The story of my family.

I want to share a special story about this synthesizer. For those who don’t know, Rob Hordijk who created this system passed on September 6th, 2022. With the help of some close friends I was able to get my hands on 6 modules without a case. Randomly this wooden case popped up on Reverb and a friend sent it to me. It was actually Rob’s case he used before he passed. After some re-configuring of the modules power, I got it all assembled and finally it was ready to be played. The next morning when I woke up, the first thing I saw on my feed was Rob smiling and waving. Turns out the system got finished being built on the 3 year anniversary of his passing, September 6th, 2025. Truly felt like he was waving at me. To think he had built these modules by hand and I assembled them in his own case, maybe he saw that from afar. Thank you Mr. Hordijk for your punk brilliance. I will continue to share your masterpiece with the world.
