Devon “Vonnie” Smith (@videovonn) is an artist and professor of practice in film production at SMU in Dallas, TX. His work is currently up at Kinfolk House (@kinfolkhouse_fw) in Fort Worth as part of the exhibition “Home Made”. Houston! @flatspresents has a new gallery room and we visited @_arianagomez show, My Mother Speaks of Land and Memory. Using photography, film, and sound Ariana Gomez works within installation to understand the link between identity, land, home, and memory to create a living archive of her family’s history. We couldn’t help but feel the origin point of the Flats mission, sharing work in home settings and allowing audiences to engage with art in non traditional spaces. Read our latest interview where we sit down with artist and curator, Zan Zeller (@zzzan.jpg) from Houston, TX. Zan is the Assistant Director at Koslov Larsen (@koslovlarsen) gallery and has been curating and organizing exhibitions since before their inception, showcasing a keen eye for artistic processes and a passion for fostering meaningful connections between artists and audiences. They received a BA in Art History and Visual & Dramatic Arts with a concentration in Film/Photography from Rice University. We spoke to Zan about the future direction of the photographic medium, their curatorial vision and gained valuable insights into the dynamic between artists and the gallery. We checked out Troy Ezequiel Montes’ exhibition Cielo Azul / Cielo Nublado at Art is Bond Gallery in Houston, TX. Montes mounts a beautifully exquisite rendition of his home away from home El Porvenir, in Zacatecas Mexico, incorporating hand-woven textiles, depictions of family and bringing to life the colorful and subtle form of its spirit. The show will be on view until January 27, 2024. Go see it!
