Hi to some new friends & followers! This account has been private for a long time, but since I'm now doing some more public-facing writing and DJing, I decided to make it public. It means that you may have requested to follow me months (or years!) ago, when I was only accepting follow requests from IRL friends. Welcome! I'm happy you're here.
I'm Saima. I'm a journalist and indie media diehard who's got a hand in a few different publications (officially: @thebreachcommunity and @btlbooks; unofficially, as a fan and hypeman: @briarpatch.mag and @thegrindto, which I previously edited). I occasionally moonlight as a DJ. I can also be found sewing, planning elaborate birthday parties, baking cakes, writing articles, editing books, and organizing.

Last but not least, let’s meet the three local DJs who will be spinning until late at The Grind’s 3-year anniversary party on Friday!
First up, we’ve got INCOGNITA (@incog.ca), who invites you into a sphere of rhythm, melody and culture with her unique blends of global club sound.
Next we’ve got NO*MAD (@no_____mad_), who mixes a blend of deep house, dancehall, club, and dub heaters. His sets always bring something you’ve never heard on the dance floor before, while keeping people moving.
A finally, The Grind’s own DURGA (@desaima), a DJ and journalist who’s curious about the sounds and ideas that move us in sync. You’ll catch bollywood, dancehall, reggaeton, and jungle in her blend of floor-shaking electronic music from all reaches of the world.
Find the link for tickets in our bio.

For the last five months I've been running a fellowship program at @xtramagazine, teaching five early-career journalists about labour reporting.
I've always complained about how labour journalism has wasted away in Canada, how writing about work and workers has been replaced by business sections and real estate reports. This was my small way of turning the tide: training a handful of brand-new labour journalists.
They've written about queer and trans people at work: five fascinating stories of farmers, teachers, job-hunters, public servants, and baristas. Some stories are sobering, some are uplifting, and they are all truly worth a read.
I also wrote a little essay introducing the 2025 Ken Popert Media Fellowship and the fellows' stories. You know where to find the link, so go give it a read. ❤️🔥

For @thebreachmedia, Aniket and I dig into the question: why is the right winning over Canada's suburbs?
If the left in Canada continues on its existing track – ignoring the suburbs until our campaigns and candidates are trounced there, then retreating to the downtown core to lick our wounds – we stand no chance of building mass movements for big, lasting change.
Lucky for us, progressive suburban organizers – from @naujawansupportnetwork, @yswtenantunion, @streetsville4palestine, @ccncto, @erinmills.ndp, and @bushra4sauga – have been developing a playbook. Consistency, taking up physical space, focussing on material needs, making it fun. Some of it is well-worn organizing wisdom, and some of it surprised me.
If we listen to their advice, we might still turn the tide.

Hot girls for @thegrindto 💦
New issue of The Grind is out! @jonathan.browngilbert and I ran our paper route today in the hot hot heat because we love you and want you to be able to pick up your print copy 💕
This one is the Food Issue and I've written about foraging for wild foods, the hidden gems in GTA strip malls, and why Toronto hates its food delivery workers. Also inside: many amazing restaurant reviews, essays about working in kitchens and fields, and lists of our beloved spots.
The Grind remains independent, non-profit, and run by (hot, sweaty) volunteers like me! Make a donation if you've read and appreciated it 💗
Articles and donation info are in the usual place ☀️

New issue of The Grind is out!
We made this one in a dizzyingly fast three-week sprint, to get it out before the Ontario election. It looks at Doug Ford's impact on Ontario, from health care to education. Remember all those scandals, bad deals, and cronyism? Remember that time he swallowed a bee? That's all in there.
Pick up a copy for free around Toronto – in the TTC and restaurants and coffee shops – or read it online. U know where the l!nk is.

I have a new article out in @thebreachmedia about Hindu nationalism in Canada!
Aniket and I took a look at the growing alliance between the Conservative Party of Canada and Hindu nationalists – how the Liberal Party failed immigrant voters, how the Conservative Party stole them away in droves with help from right-wing Hindu groups who parroted Conservative talking points, and the Hindu right's ultimate goal of patronage to Hindu nationalist policy should the CPC be elected this year.
Aniket and I spent months attending Hindu nationalist events, vying for interviews with leaders of right-wing Hindu orgs, scouring social media, and talking to activists and scholars. We will likely be writing about Hindu nationalism in North America for months to come – there's so much there, and so little existing coverage of it.

Happy pub day to @joy.and.defiance for their brilliant new fiction book, Disobedience. It's queer speculative fiction about the tough, dangerous, sweet struggle to build a world of freedom and justice amid abject violence. I had the honour of helping to edit it.
I'll be speaking at the book launch on Thursday night alongside Daniel Sarah and @kaichengthom. Come out, buy a book. It's really, really worth reading.

The new issue of the Grind is out!
The Grind is a new-ish magazine about Toronto's politics, arts, and culture, and it comes out every two-ish months. Think: the spiritual successor and the more rad little sister of NOW Toronto (RIP). It's totally free and you'll find it in spots around the city, including in TTC stations. And the rumours are true, lmao – I am the new (💓volunteer💓) features editor.
So many good stories in this latest issue, including a profile of DJ collective Afrique Like Me, @michaeldeforgecomics' infographic about Canadian media's biased coverage of the Palestinian genocide, a review of @patersinister's new comic book, etc.
I edited a feature by a paramedic who risked his job to share details from inside the alarming depths of the ambulance crisis, and helped edit another feature about the long arc of Toronto's defund the police movement.
Right now I am accepting story ideas and pitches for features for The Grind's April/May issue. Send me an email or a DM!
It's a labour of love and a leap of faith to start a new local publication. I will yell until I'm hoarse: we need independent local media to connect us and inform us if we want to stand a chance of tackling the crises we face in this city. The Grind doesn't yet break even – if you want to help keep it going and growing, please donate! Links are where the links go.
❤️🔥 Indie media forever ❤️🔥

I've been dragging my feet posting about this because it's breaking my heart. And it's weird to do textposts on Instagram as if I'm an ~influencer~. But many of you know me through my work at Briarpatch. And the news is that I'm not returning to Briarpatch in 2024.
Here's a little announcement that I wrote, which you can find on the "announcements" section of Briarpatch's website.
This means: Briarpatch is hiring a new editor. Please spread the word far and wide, and consider applying! Applications are due Jan 31. Link's in my bio.
I was the editor for five years and absolutely loved the job. I'd be happy to answer any questions. <3

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
