Devin Osorio @devinosorio creates artifacts of the first-generation Dominican American experience, blending symbolism, magical realism, and personal narrative. Their work exudes warmth and generosity while reflecting on queer and trans histories in Washington Heights and honoring family and community.

“My practice begins with returning to childhood spaces I once tried to forget, offering those memories the gentleness and acceptance I needed to survive. Growing up queer, fat, and gender nonconforming in Washington Heights—within a culture shaped by strict codes of masculinity—I learned to hide parts of myself for safety. Through fiber-based installations, murals, and mixed-media works, I transform those experiences into spaces of healing and reclamation. Drawing from Dominican culture, folkloric traditions, and the geography of Washington Heights, my work explores diasporic identity, cultural hybridity, and the possibility of collective joy.”

Devin Osorio’s dreamlike trees bring summer to life in ‘Aprender Del Caer’ 🌳

Featuring a figure suspended from a branch of a tropical fruit tree, ‘Aprender Del Caer’was inspired by a conversation that @devinosorio once had with a South African shaman, who told them, “I’ve always felt bad for kids that grow up in big cities because there are no trees. When you grow up around trees, you learn to climb them and, more importantly, how to fall off of them. You learn that the scariest part of falling off the trees is the idea of falling.”
